Hello, welcome to the Hashimoto’s Connection. On today’s show, I have the pleasure of interviewing doctor Stephen Lewis of Green Wisdom Health. Doctor Lewis has a long history of helping people achieve their optimal health by using extensive but affordable lab work. He stays current on the latest research, pertaining to nutritional supplements and optimal health, and he has a unique perspective on all alternative and complementary nutrition from studying with numerous national leading alternative health experts. Doctor Lewis was a joy to interview and has a refreshing straight to the point type of personality that I’m sure you will enjoy as much as I did. Listen in to hear his approach to wellness and how supplements play a role in long-term health. I’m sandy Robinson. I’m a wife, mother, health coach, personal trainer, personal fitness chef, and entrepreneur. Through my own personal challenges with being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, I discovered the dire need for a better support system. Join me as I bridge the information and communication gap between patients, caregivers, family members, Friends, and coworkers, through helpful tips, inspiring stories and motivating interviews. I call this the Hashimoto’s connection. How did you get involved in chiropractic care and in functional medicine? You know, I was asked that question on a very large podcast one time and I started crying because I saw my daddy died when I was 15 years old. Maybe from ulcerative colitis, but maybe from the drugs they gave him for that. And I knew right then at 15, I was smarter than that. I developed ulcerative colitis whether it was physical or psychological, whatever. And I went to 5 different MDs. I had 5 different diagnoses and 5 different treatments, not one of them that worked. And I love her MDH. Don’t misunderstand me. They did a lot of really good things, but so I pursued chiropractic and we look at things in a musculoskeletal arena and I figured that what I thought through some good nutrients, notice I said good. That even if it’s four musculoskeletal things, other things got better. Well, if it’s turmeric, will it help their brain to help their cognitive factors that help their eyesight and help decrease inflammation? I did it people do things for two reasons. You make a decision to do something because you’re moving away from pain. Are you making a decision to do something because you’re moving toward pleasure? And the story about my daddy died leaving 5 kids at home and a mother that didn’t have any skills, that’s what motivated me to go on and hopefully bless thousands and thousands of lives in the meantime and provide information on how supplements play a role in long-term health. I’m so sorry you had to go through that, but thank you for sharing that really means a lot. It’s a big part of your journey. I’m sure, so when you are treating patients and they come to you for back pain, but then you realize there’s a lot more to their story. How do you address that with them? What is that like? Because most people do see chiropractors as the back doctors, where you go when you’re in back pain. For the most part, I’ve quit chiropractic, and I don’t do insurance because, you know, lack the healthcare in America, only covers 10% of what affects us with healthcare. They don’t talk about structure and function. They don’t talk about the environmental factors. They don’t talk about the exposures to the poisons that we have every day. They don’t talk about lifestyle. And they don’t talk about being happy and finding joy, which if you don’t have that faith joy, hope you don’t have anything anyway. So I don’t really do the chiropractic. I just morphed into functional medicine, basically and informing patients on how supplements play a role in long-term health. So what is the process for your clients as they come to you and they’re seeking to get well? What is the typical process look like? We do very extensive lab work minimum suggested panel is like 12 different panels on your average doctor you get two or three. And I really prefer to go up from the 12 and get into, say, female hormones, which would be estradiol, progesterone, DHEA, and testosterone. And I think that’s very important. And even people that say, well, I don’t have sexual dysfunction. I said, well, we’re not talking about sexual dysfunction because these hormones, they play in what your thyroid’s doing.

00:05:02 – 00:10:01

They play into what your hypothalamus, your pituitary, your adrenal glands are doing. You have to see the big picture. So, in America, we’ve become a reductionist system. Doctors look at you like, well, they’re sandy, the Hashimoto’s patient. No, you’re not. You’re a whole person, and you have to be looked at as a whole person. And I don’t charge for the consultation, get 30 minutes for free and I do it very, very inexpensively. And the lab works super, super cheap, many times people try to be cheap. And get this lab through their MD and they come to me and say, holy God, my 20% was more than what you were charging. I know, honey, but you’d have to learn the hard way. So, I’m trying to deliver good value for the money. Because I really do care. Right. I see that. So what is your ultimate goal when someone comes in to you to discuss what they’re trying to achieve or do you inspire them on what they should try to achieve? What is the goal look like when it comes to treating your patients? How do you explain how supplements play a role in long-term health? There’s two things that’s pretty common in talking to me. I’ll ask them to always listen with the discerning spirit, your gut, feeling your intuition, your discerning spirit. And then the other thing that’s pretty common is I say, do you want me to sugarcoat or shoot straight? And one time I had a guy said, I want you to sugarcoat it and I said, this first time in 30 years, I’ve been speechless. I don’t know how to sugarcoat anything. This is not a bakery. I just try to make them comfortable where they feel like they can open up to me. What makes it successful when someone comes to you and they’re not feeling well, what does success look like? I want to share for different people. Sometimes I get people that cry and I’ll say yep. I see that frustration. I see your desperation. I fear. I’m pretty good listener. Someone asked this. I listened very, very carefully. When I get help. Now, there doesn’t seem to be many doctors that take this approach. Why do you feel that this is appropriate? You know you’re opening up a can of worms, right? Yes. Our country as a whole were overfed and undernourished. And there’s about 72% of us that’s overweight. If not obese, and that’s from the national health and nutrition examination study why is it where the fatty sick is nation on the base of their earth. And I’ve seen several different companies. Countries in Europe, I’ve been to China to study. We’re the sickest nation on the face of the earth. According to the Commonwealth fund, according to the New England New England Journal of Medicine, there’s all kinds of studies. Why are we so sick? Why don’t we understand how supplements play a role in long-term health? We have the best medical profession, but again, they cover 10% of what makes us healthy. And I bridge the gap to get to that other 90%. So, we have to change our diet. And again, you know, you’re the Hashimoto specialist in because you’ve lived it. And what does that grind? And if you look at we need fiber, something will say, well, we need fiber in the grain. It’s like, well, fresh and vegetables have two to 8 times more fiber than a grain does. Yes. Right. You’re deciding to make cows with fat. I don’t need marble to make tender rib eye steak. Grind you’re not good. They’re not good for us. Yes. I have found my best results have definitely come through. Organic produce and really grass fed well cared for meats. Without any of those additives or the animals also being given the diet that’s ideal for them and that filling them up on the wrong thing. That’s very true. And I’d like to say, you know, you’re probably going to help many, many, many people just because you have not been educated into a box. And I think that’s what’s happened. You know, I talk about reductionist the white people doctors think that you’re a thyroid problem, your heart problem, your high blood pressure. You don’t think inside that box you haven’t been educated into a box. I’ve had to uneducated myself to be more and more holistic. So you’re doing a lot of good just right where you are. Oh, thank you. I hope so. I really feel like this journey has been harder than it should have been.

00:10:02 – 00:15:02

I had to learn a lot of hard lessons, you know? And I don’t want people to have to learn that way. And I really feel like ultimately God allows us to walk a journey for a reason. And I don’t feel it’s supposed to go void. So my journey, my story, the things that I go through, the good and the bad. I want to learn from it and then help others. So that is 100% why I do what I do. I really want to make a difference. And allow the people that listen, the people that come to me, the people that come to you, they ultimately want to they want to feel well. And so if we’ve learned how to do that, we should share it. We should explain to them how supplements play a role in long-term health. And we should also be open minded that there might be new information as we go on this journey that might change the path a little bit too. That’s something else that I’ve seen in conventional medicine, there’s that box that you talk about where there’s a certain amount of training, there’s a certain way of thinking, and then there’s a lot of closed mindedness to any other options around that. And so constantly educating yourself and being open. You know, that goes back to the journal of the American medical association where it says, well, we only addressed 10% of the issues that lead to preventable death. Now, notice they said preventable death. They only addressed 10% of that. And that’s why it’s committed to bridge that gap. And you said, you know, the tough journey, well, the Bible says, all things work for good, and that’s very, very true, but you got to look for it. Right. Yeah. And you don’t know what good is unless you’ve experienced that, right? So you really do have to have a little bit of both. You need that contract. That’s right. So when it comes to people that are trying to change the health, a lot of people think that all they have to do is just change their diet, everything should be fine. Where do you stand in that? Trying to be polite. I think it’s for I use the term BS a lot, stands for beaches and sunshine belief systems. I think you need, I think when I say BS, you need to change your belief systems. Diet, you can’t eat a bad diet and taking up supplements to get toward a 100%, but you can’t do it with your diet alone. It can not happen. There’s studies about how bad our food was in the 1970s. And then from 1976, I think it was to the year 2000, the nutrient level went down 6 to 76% from 70 something to the year 2000. And it’s worse now. Wow. I trade organic farmers in up to 18 or 20 different states and although they eat totally organic. They say, oh my God, I feel so much better on your supplements. Oh my God, I can’t believe it. I only eat organic, but it’s grown on mentally depleted soil. And our world is so toxic, toxicities will want to part of that 90% very few people use to bridge the gap. They don’t address that. Did you know we’re absorbing DDT now, even though we’ve America banded, I think in 1974, we’re still getting DDT from the gesturing and now the Saharan dust is coming our way. DDT from where they’re spraying it, trying to get rid of the mosquito to get rid of malaria. We have DDT, our polar bears have osteoporosis, and thyroid problems, hypothyroidism in our polar bears. So it’s not just get out of gluten, which is imperative. Yes, you’ve got to change your diet, but I don’t think it’s complete. I’m sorry, I’ll go off on these rabbit trails about how supplements play a role in long-term health. We only back in. That’s good. I agree. My eyes have been opened to toxins on a whole new level in my studies lately. And I’ve actually done some shows on that recently, and I intend to do more because it has been very eye opening and depending on what generation you’re in, you’ve been exposed to even more toxins because they don’t really just go away. And one of the things that was really mind-blowing to me was the lead talks and lead exposure. I grew up around lead paint. And I do remember touching walls and that top coming off and thinking that was kind of fun, you know? And that, you know, that’s something that I was exposed to. I never dealt with it. I didn’t know to deal with it. And then I had children. Well, I’ve done research that suggests that that now has been passed on to my children. And they likely have some level of lead exposure as a result of that, which, again, I would have never known to check that tested or even think about it because lead has not been a part of our culture for so long.

00:15:03 – 00:20:02

So that is just one example, but like you said, there are certain toxins and chemicals that were used decades ago that are still somehow showing up in our soil or showing up in our blood, even studies with newborns, umbilical cords. Their blood and the umbilical cord had toxins from their mother that was just toxins from the cosmetics and shampoos at the mother was using never even thought twice about it. And now here, a newborn baby is born with this. So I don’t see all that to bring fear, but it’s more of like this really profound awareness of we really are exposed to a lot. So what can we do to try to combat that? How can we get rid of it? How can we eat? How can we live? And in your case, you’ve really talked a lot about supplements being a big part of that journey too. Tell us a little bit about what a supplement plan might look like with somebody comes in, they’re not feeling well, you do. Some functional labs, you find out some deficiencies. Where do you go from there? How do you show them the role supplements play in long-term health? Well, let me preface that by asking the audience a question. Sure. And have you ever been to a doctor and he said you’re fine, but you didn’t feel fine? Oh, yes. Okay. That’s where people like me and you come in. You know, you can’t get any big group to agree on everything. But generally speaking, the people in the nutritional field say that you need a good multi. And again, most of them are not good. About a good multi, good fish oil, probiotics, digestive enzymes, and then they say fiber. Well, if you’re eating fruits and vegetables, you don’t need to fiber and argue that you need vitamin D and magnesium because our governments and you know how smart our government is. Best you can do on magnesium out of your diets, 40% of what you need every day. So I think the basic, you know, I think there’s a foundational 5, 6 or 7, but then when I test people and they have hypothyroidism, which is two out of three or three out of four, you know, we have different natural desiccated thyroid supplements. We have a couple of them that are very, very effective. Then we’ll put them on the selenium the zinc. The tyrosine to convert T four to T three, and iodine, if you have Hashimoto’s, you want to stay under that 200 microgram. And then you need B vitamins. And here’s something you don’t hear much about. You know as well as I do that hypothyroidism part, a big part of the equation is leaky gut or pre celiac disease. Yes, increased intestinal permeability is the term doctors like to hear. Exactly. Well, I use a product that’s a bovine derived immunoglobulin, which goes in sales lady God, it provides immunoglobulin G, which is super important. I’ve had people at which is full Blum celiac. Which, you know, I was found to be real close. I didn’t know it was gluten, but and when I take this, I do really, really well. And I tell my patients, yeah, Janet puts one scoop a day in my drink and Janice to start to lose to know what he gets. I get him two or three students just to keep him healthy. But it helps my God function because I’ve had those decades to accumulate the toxins and to have that permeability problem. The other thing is most people not heard of saccharomyces bellardi, that’s a yeast that takes bad yeast fungus and virus and it provides immunoglobulin a, which most people don’t know that. Well, I didn’t know what ten or 20 years ago either. You know, we’re always learning like you say. Right. You know, we’re going to be smart when we get 94. I hope so. I hope one day I can say I’m smart. That’s awesome. Listen to you’re really smart. I can tell you that because you had to be because you learned the hard way. Well, thank you. I appreciate it. It is a learning journey for sure. And I do enjoy reading about it. I geek out on this stuff all the time. So, well, all my Friends are reading really cool fiction books and enjoying themselves and reading all the medical stuff and it’s fun. So hopefully it will continue to pay off and help others. So when it comes to supplements, there’s so many different brands and I know, you know, I have a certain favorite brand at you have your favorite brand and some of that where the same on that, I think.

00:20:04 – 00:25:01

I have done episodes on this before, but help listeners understand why you actually have to be careful about what supplements you choose. You don’t want to just buy just anything at Walmart or just anything on Amazon. There’s some regulation there that you need to pay attention to. You want to explain that a little bit? Do you want me to? Yeah. Yeah, help them understand how to pick because it’s hard. There’s so many, and they don’t want to spend a lot of money. But the most expensive, most expensive supplement in the world is the cheap one that won’t work. There’s a special investigator for the FDA. He said 40% of everything on Amazon is fake. Counterfeited. And they said, about the labels, the same, and you know, I’m a country boy from east Texas, okay, I like to shoot straight as they say. People say, well, it says this. I said, well, your first wife said she’d love on her by Mario lab number 5. All women are not the same and neither are all supplements. People are different. You have to find the right fit. And I synthetic supplement the molecule rotates in the wrong direction. It’s like putting a left handed threaded knot on the right handed threaded bolt. It’s a mirror’s image, but it won’t fit. And then not only does your body have to use energy to detoxify it with a liver that’s already overburdened. It has to use several times as much energy to do that. And then it ties it up to where it can’t get rid of the other toxic exposures. But to digestion. So yeah, you know, the supplements I get, I have to have an active license. If I let my license expire, they don’t sell to me. And if I have a question, I can text my rep, I can get in touch with the scientists, the PhDs, very, very quickly. And when they beat me down with knowledge, I just say yes, ma’am. Thank you very much. But I’m satisfied by show me the research to prove what they’re saying and how supplements play a role in long-term health. So, you know, the old saying of trust, but verify. Yeah, I’ve got access to the scientists behind these things. That’s wonderful. It is important because there are a lot of studies that have come across over the years. And just stories of people purchasing supplements, Amazon’s one of them, but you can purchase just online. You have access to a lot. And even there’s supplements that gas stations now, you know, where they are making claims that, you know, it’s going to do something for you. And the thing is it’s not regulated. And it has been found in some cases to be deadly, not just not effective, but actually harmful. And so it is important that when listeners are choosing supplements that they’re not just choosing it based on the price that you’re looking at making sure that it’s regulated in some way that there’s quality ingredients. And that they’re actually able to work for your body because there might be some supplements to make planks that might not be the right one for you. It might be counterproductive. There’s certain things you should not take depending on the conditions you have. So having your supervision, having someone that’s trained, like you are, like I am, to walk that journey with them is important as well. So they don’t just start taking every random thing that they see a commercial for. So that’s very helpful when explaining how supplements play a role in long-term health. Now, there’s a really common concern that people have as they’re going through health journeys. There’s the stress and anxiety that depression that kind of comes along with this brain fog. Those types of symptoms, of course, there’s so many different things that can cause that. We’re not counselors. We can’t go into counseling sessions. We’re not qualified to do that. But what I have found on my journey and you may have found the same thing that a lot of times, someone might go to counseling to get that immediate help with depression anxiety, things like that. But then they can start working with us and work on that root cause. Like, what’s maybe the imbalance? What’s some of your experience with that? How have you managed that with your patients? Well, I think there’s two commonalities that it’s always part of the equation. It’s inflammation and guts dysfunction. And people say, I want to say giant track have to do with Brian and how I feel. I said, well, that’s where the neurotransmitters are made. The happy hormones. And then I’ll look at their library enzymes, and if their liver enzymes are sub optimal, number one, you’re not getting good digestion, which contributes to poor gut function. Number two, the liver can’t methylate and you don’t have good B 6. When it takes good be 6 to allow the neurotransmitters to cross the blood brain barrier to be happy.

00:25:01 – 00:30:01

And the other thing is because of our S.A.D., standard American diet. We overgrow yeast in that is part of the intestinal permeability problem. And the yeast put out an enzyme called thiaminase, which means it steals your thiamine. And people say all my anti form, brain fog. So I just give them a big dose of fat soluble thiamine, and within two days to two or three weeks, they’ll write me, call me email and say, oh my God, my brain folks down on us. And we’ll tell your husband, bring me chocolates to say thank you. But then you starve the yeast. You put in some killers and then you put in good, good, good probiotics, especially the ones including the saccharomyces bellardi. Once you have a healthy GI tract, everything else gets healthy, but now stress anxiety and depression can be an adrenal problem if thyroid problem they bounce off each other if your thyroid’s low, you’re free T three is low. Then your adrenals have to get in more cortisol, which puts your pituitary and hypothalamus in your brain makes them crazy. But you have to balance. It’s about looking at the entire thing as a whole, so that’s why, you know, you’re looking at a minimum of 5, 6, 7 minimum, different types of supplements to get the critical mass of nutrients so that your body can work with the better food that you’re eating. So it takes a lot, it takes persistence. It takes that hope. Faith without works is dead. Works means you have to take the action step and you have to be patient. Right. Do you have a certain time frame that you usually recommend for people to just to kind of be patient with the process? When you’re going in and you’re trying to kind of stabilize things. Is there a kind of a generalized amount of time that it takes to get people to a really good point? They might not be a 100% yet, but you know. Yeah, you know, Jen and I have taken lots and lots and lots of lots of courses about the role supplements play in long-term health. And some of the naturopathic doctors that we’ve taken courses with say that three months plus a month for every year you’re sick. I think it’s like pregnancy, you know, the first trimester of three months. You can start to tell changes. The second trimester, even greater changes. And then the third trimester. So I think three months is reasonable. And we usually will renew lab work there and again, I do, you know, 12 to 20 different panels. I don’t just check your CBC. We’ve just added the TPO on the other 5 parts of the thyroid that we check or we’ve done that for women. The D dimer for the men because my wife, she’s a very good negotiator and she got the lab to come down on the price where we, our process, the same, which is rock, bottom, low. And we can throw in another test. The day dimer used to be a $160 and now, I don’t know what they charge us, but it’s a fraction of that because we’re trying to give the most value to the patient. So that they can down that TPO, you’ll find that that’s very, very useful because of the journey you’ve gone through. Right. I don’t know. This is too much fun not to practice is what it is. It’s fun. Yeah, I agree. I don’t ever see myself stopping really, you know? There might be a point where maybe I’m not an asset to the industry anymore because just, you know, there’s a point where you maybe get tired and you don’t research as much or you aren’t as relevant. I don’t know. I hope I’ve never at that point, but I love it. I do love helping people. So I’m glad that you do too. So I feel like one of the other questions it’s really common in supplements is and there’s people think on this differently. So there’s no really wrong answer with it. But when it comes to adding supplements in, is this like a lifelong thing, you’re gonna be on supplements forever, take in 20 pills, or is it a temporary thing in the goal to come off? Where do you stand on that? Well, I do analogies. So you’re going down the road in your car and all that comes up, so in our system are so called healthcare system, we just pull the fuse out so the whole line goes up. So we keep running down the road and all of a sudden, a hundred miles down the road, you’re in just starts to smoke.

00:30:01 – 00:35:03

And he’s all it’ll be fine. It’ll be fine. Just roll down the wind as, you know, get rid of the symptom. And then on hundred miles further down the road, your car catches on fire. That’s when we go into the old change place and say, I think I need an all change. And that’s what we’re doing to our bodies. Do you need to take supplements? And I can get this question. How long do I have to take them? As long as you want to be toward a 100% of what God intends for you to be. When can I get off of when you want to go back and be as sick as you are now? Yes, you still need it like you need a continuous wall change to keep your engine running before it needs an overhaul. Right. I mean, I’ve got to take a lot of supplements to feel 30 years younger than I am and I have this much crazy energy and I run down rabbit trails with my thoughts. It’s supplements that pull that off. So I think it’s a continual thing. You have to work toward health or wait till disease and then move away from the pain of disease or you can move toward health, like I talked about moving away from or moving toward pleasure. This is how supplements play a role in long-term health. Right. I’m more of a sacred Sunday things for the pleasure in the future rather than the sad story of something bad happening. Right. Have you found that by doing this that you’ve been able to have a lot of your patients come off their prescription medications as a result of balancing these underlying root causes? Yes, but being a chiropractor, I never encourage them to do anything with their medicines, but I’ll tell you a favorite story. There’s this guy and he was about my age and he was really, really grumpy and I loved him because I can relate to him. I just remember I said, you better get your blood pressure under control. You can do it naturally or you can do it medically. I don’t care your blood pressure’s too high anymore. I said, hey, do it. And then two or three years later, he comes in with stage three kidney disease. Oh, well, Dan, he’s moving away from pain. He wants to take a lot of supplements all of a sudden. He went from stage three kidney disease down to perfect in his doctor. His kidney specialist was scratching his head. Problems down, so he quit his supplements. Right? It comes in two or three years after that in stage four. Kidney disease because he never fixed the underlying cause. And, you know, you have to meet a patient where they are. And he’s a little huffy. And I love it. I love it. I said, you got to be a $1 million to spend. He said, you know, I said, well, you better give it to your daughter, because buddy, you ain’t going to be able to spend it. I said, you better take this serious. And he took it serious. And he took lots and lots and lots and lots of my supplements. And he never went on dialysis until he could because he let it go too far. He had, he got a donor, a donor kidney. And I was sitting in here the other day with a couple of patients and he came in to the office and we went out and we hugged each other’s necks and he says, thank you. It brought out soft, sweet side. You know, how some men are a little overly tough. But he never went through dialysis. And we worked with his kidney specialist. But yes, they can get off. If you get help, all in these that I’ve ever known, if you’re healthy, they don’t want you on the drug. So yeah. They get off their medicine. They’re metformin glucophage. Sometimes they get fired with stuff. Now, I don’t suggest this. I always tell them work with your doctor. As you get better, here’s the lab, take it to them. Yeah. We’re not supposed to be on drugs. Right. Yeah. I hope to be able to come off of them, right? There’s certain ones that you do have to take. And if you have a health condition that requires that or if you don’t have a thyroid anymore, there’s certain things you’re just going to have to take that medication. But if there are ones that you’re taking that are trading symptoms and your doctor is good with you, trying to come off of it and treat it naturally, then that’s a win on both sides because now you’re getting the supplement that’s helping you with your baseline levels and then you don’t have the medication that might have those negative side effects. This is how supplements play a role in long-term health. You know, not every medication has bad side effects. But a lot of them do. So it’s good to come off of that if you can. So that’s a good thing. Where do you stand on hormones? How does that work when you have women that are reaching that stage of life when they’re testosterone levels are really drop in their approaching menopause? It’s pretty miserable.

00:35:05 – 00:40:01

There’s a lot of hormone treatment places everywhere you go. Some are just worthy summer not. Do you have any way to provide clarity on that for listeners? Well, for women, usually even young women, they usually have a bad ratio of estrogen to progesterone because the environmental estrogens, the plastics, the pesticides, you know, I mean, we’re just inundated with those things that act like estrogen. And that’s why me and have low testosterone because we have the environmental estrogens. So, we put them on a natural progesterone where your body can make its own progesterone and most women and I’m talking about high 90%. Say, oh my God, my hair stopped falling out. I’m sleeping better. I’m losing a little weight. My headaches have gone away. My heart stopped fluttering. These are just a few examples of how supplements play a role in long-term health. And again, I tell him to tell your husband, bring me chocolates to say thank you. Man, it’s a little tougher. Because we’re inundated with estrogen mimicking four months. And that’s one of the reasons we’re obese. The body doesn’t want to shrink those fat cells to expose you to more xenoestrogens, they’re called endocrine disruptors, the estrogen members, your body doesn’t want to let go of those because your detoxification pathways aren’t turned on anyway. Man, it’s a little tougher. You can take DHEA. You have to play with it on a lab to find the best level for that particular person. And you generally put them on things that unbind the testosterone to make it free, testosterone. Yeah, we get some really good results. But again, it takes time. It’s usually not instant. A lot of people that are happy. If they stick with it, you know, the older I get the more I think, well, if you put it in, got a blessed, but you got to be patient. Yeah. That’s true. The hormone situation is definitely a journey of trial and error. So it is. Yeah. But once you get it figured out, you really do feel a 100% better. It’s definitely something to it’s worth the work. It’s worth that effort to figure it out and learn how supplements play a role in long-term health. So listeners are curious about your particular practice. They really want to work with you. How does that work? You’re in Texas. Our listeners there, we have a huge base, all the reunited states, Australia, really all over the world. But they are primary listeners are in the United States, so I think that’s a good thing because they will have the easiest access to you. How would they go about that? Again, I’m parenting what my wife tells me. It’s go to green wisdom, dot com and click on the health service. I fill out the health survey. It’ll tell you what lab that we recommend, which is usually one or two of my favorites. And again, if you want to talk to me before you do that, that’s fine too. We can order labs in 47 states. And I do zoom and phone calls all day long. And I tell people, well, you need this. This is what’s on your lab and in a functional nutritional functional medicine type way of looking at it, you need this because of this. Very good. So that’s pretty easy to do. It’s easy to reach you. And then just Zoom calls after that. And then are you able to work with their doctors if they are, if they have another medical condition where they’re under a doctor’s care, do you talk directly to their doctor or do you just give them kind of advice on how to communicate with their doctor on what you’re doing? How does that part work? It’s more tell them how to communicate with their doctor because most doctors are too busy. We don’t need one more thing. They were one more place to be. You know, I’ll say, well, you know, you have a high C reactive protein, which, according to the Cleveland clinic, is four times better indicator of future heart attack or stroke than your cholesterol number. So if we put you on these things and decrease that inflammation and your blood pressure begins to go down then you will talk to your doctor that prescribed the blood pressure lowering medicine. You’re ace inhibitor beta blocker, whatever. If your blood pressure goes down because you’re starting to get healthier, you talk to that doctor about, do they think it’s appropriate to change your meds, change the dosage. But yeah, I don’t play doctor to them. I play nutritional chiropractor from a function of medicine, but yeah, I’ve never had any medical doctor that wasn’t anything, but very sincere and very nice.

00:40:02 – 00:43:46

That’s awesome. That’s good. A lot of this patients to. You know, I think the more this type of care is made mainstream, the more people realize that this is available, I really do think we’re going to be seen as an asset to doctors because we need each other. There are certain things that you can’t handle just from the supplement standpoint. You need intervention. You need true lifesaving intervention. And then there is the thing where we’re going to be able to work with patients on the daily. You know, those encouraging phone calls. Those moments when they just feel bad and they need the supplements to kind of give them the nutrition that they need or the diet or the planning of how to manage their lifestyle in a way that’s less toxic or less stressful. All of those things that are part of the journey, but doctors can not implement in their practice. We’re able to supplement that and inform people on how supplements play a role in long-term health. So I’m really hopeful that we will continue building really great relationships with conventional medicine so that we all work together and ultimately have really healthy people, healthy patients. Thank you for sharing your wisdom today. Thank you very much for the opportunity and, you know, if nothing else, we can give people hope. Yes. Most definitely. Special thanks to doctor Lewis today for being a guest on our show. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Now, based on what you learned from today’s episode, how can you help yourself? Well, I know you’ve heard it before, but test don’t guess. Yes, I know you’ve heard it, but it’s the best place to start. Get your functional lab work done so that you know what you’re working with. If you want to purchase your own at home lab kits, you can find a link on my show notes as well as on my website to help you get started. How to help others encourage them to also get regular checkups and testing. Our health and wellness can change over time with stress, aging, exposure to toxins, and our own genetic makeup. Don’t waste time trying to figure it out by guessing, just start testing. And last how to dig deeper. If you felt like that you really connected with Dr. Lewis today and you would like to learn more about his practice, you can reach his office at green wisdom health dot com to get more info on how to work with him. Also, if you’re interested in reading any of the research that he mentioned in today’s show, I will have the links in my show notes as well as on my website at coach sandy Robinson dot com. Show Transcription

00:00:01 – 00:05:06

Welcome to the green wisdom health podcast, with doctor Steven and Janet Lewis, where you will learn about natural solutions to common ailments. And now, here are your hosts doctor Stephen and Janet Lewis. Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the green wisdom health show. I’m Janet Lewis. And I’m doctor Lewis. And we are here to help you with all of your weight loss and thyroid questions I know that you have. This week’s episode is called the thyroid connection to weight loss because many of you out there are struggling with weight loss and it is the season for bikinis. So we want to make sure that we’re able to get into those and look really good. So we’re going to tell you today some shortcuts or maybe some long cuts to getting that body back the way you want it to be and what the thyroid has to do with it because we all know that thyroid’s got everything to do with weight loss, doesn’t it, doctor Lewis? I don’t know about everything, but it’s certainly a huge, huge player there. So what is it you would like for us to learn today about thyroid? What does it got to do with you losing weight? Well, first of all, it usually is the thyroid and the statistics vary depending on the book you read or the research or the doctor you talk to, but I’d say about two out of three or three out of four people. That we do are low cost lab work on probably three, four, 7 have a suboptimal thyroid. Well, wait a minute. When you say low cost lab work, why do you run lab work? I mean, don’t the doctor do it. I mean, haven’t they been told they’re okay? Why do you do that? I’m just asking. Okay. Asking for a friend. Well, you know, I love the whole profession, the medical profession and chiropractic may be in a chiropractor. Of course, I look at it more holistically, structure function, nerf supply. But let me just tell you a story. There’s this really wonderful medical doctor that came in. He wanted to talk to us and Janet and I was off gallivanting around the country like we do a lot in the RV. And Janet, my sweet darling a little wife says, I do not want to talk to this MD. I said, I’ll talk to him. He’s an ass guy. I’ve never met an MD that wasn’t a nice person and have good intentions. And so he came in, he was a real quiet shy, soft spoken, very, very nice man. He says, you’re getting our patients well, and we don’t understand how you’re doing it. And I said, well, God’s a lot smarter than you and me. And we’re trying to help people. We’re just doing it differently. I just throw in nutrients that your body uses for the greater good. And he says, okay. And so I asked Janet to go get this particular lab. Once she got here, my sweet wife said she didn’t want to talk to the sim day, but I said, now you’re here, what do you tell the stock for about thyroid? And she gave me the look. I have no idea what the look is. You eyes out there, have no idea what the look is. In any way, this light he had a three point something on her TSH. And that’s what most people run TSH, which is not thyroid. That is the thyroid stimulating hormone. It comes out of the pituitary in the brain. And it was a three. And the range goes up to 4.5 in Janice says, what would you do with this person? He says nothing. She’s my patient, too. I don’t do anything. It’s well within the range it’s normal. And I’m thinking it’s not normal, it’s common. There is a difference. And Janet says, well, if it doesn’t go down around 1.5, that means the brain is putting out the signal and the thyroid’s not using it. And she will be overweight. Can’t lose weight and be thyroid crazy. And he said, I’m noticing my practice, it has to be about a two or below before people can begin to lose weight. And then it said, what would you do with this T three uptake, which was the 27? He’s just not, and that’s within the range from 24 to 35. And Janice says, well, that’s usually environmental estrogen mimickers, which we’ll get to the toxins in why that stops or slows our weight loss. She says, why is it it’s okay down to 24, but holy Jesus, you’ve got to treat it at a 23. She said it’s just degrees of stress caused by estrogen mimicking plastics pesticides fire retardants et cetera. And if she’s got this, this light will be thyroid crazy. You can’t live whether she’ll be fat. Can’t lose weight and she’ll have no desire for sex and a guy wonderful man. Uncross his arms took his glasses off leaned across the desk and looked at Janet in the eyes and said, can I bring my wife in to see you? Yeah, and you know the reason I knew that was a problem is because of my own personal health issues of them telling me that my thyroid was right from a hysterectomy, they looked at it and said, oh no, your thyroid looks great. I thought then why am I a size 12 and I’ve gone from a 130 pounds up to a 149 in like 6 months.

00:05:06 – 00:10:05

I thought there is something not right here, but that’s fine, which led me on a journey to figure out why. And like doctor Lewis said the different parts of the thyroid, the TSH is just your brain getting the signal. Yes, getting a signal. That’s not your true thyroid function. My thyroid function, which probably don’t mean much to you right now, but when I had my lab run, it was a 2.8 free T three. It looks okay. That looks in the normal range, but I was huge at that point. Optimizing it to over three caused me to go back down to a size 6 8 and back to my 130 pound weight. So that is a huge difference in on a marker that doesn’t look that big. And I’m confused here because I used to tell people Janice 5 foot 432 pounds. She says, Steven, I’m not that fat. Of course. A lot of pounds. Might have been when she was thyroid crazy, but I would never say that. And that’s what it causes. It causes things like slow metabolism, heart functions, not right. So you have heart palpitations. Poor digestion. So you have more constipation issues. You have a lack of energy. And so many people are suffering with that right now. It’s like, no energy. Their appetite is not good. But there’s another part to that though. It usually if you feel better after exercise, you probably have a low thyroid. Well, you’d have said low energy. What’s the other part of that? The other party is if you feel worse after exercise, that’s usually a sign of your adrenals have in poor function. How interesting you have to nourish incorrect adrenal function before taking on your thyroid healing because the thyroid will not heal until you have your adrenals working. They run off of each other. They can’t HPA axis. Thyroid pituitary. You know, it’s cool. That’s why I like it. That’s why I like listening, aka being a part of the show. Because I learned things from you that I’ve never heard before. It’s like this little dictionary of knowledge. It’s usually slamming Perkins. I’ve never heard that about the exercise thing about what is it again if you want to exercise? Well, if you feel better after exercising, you probably have a low thyroid. But if you feel worse, it’s probably you need to heal your adrenals and the problem is here’s the issue folks. If you want to get well, you have to commit time to it because not everybody gets well because there are limitations, physiologically, there’s limitations to time. And you have to give your body time and people unfortunately, people quit way too soon. It usually takes a couple of years just to fix your adrenals because you have to get rid of a lot of the stressors, which can be mental that you create yourself, but it’s many, many times it’s mold, you’re don’t know you’re getting it. It’s the story we tell about us being crop dusted in Mississippi and Louisiana, two different times. Thyroid things that cause thyroid inflammation or the cytokines that create that in an unrelenting cytokine storm can lead to cancer and a lot of other things. The best thing you can do for your thyroids give up grains and people say, I had a friend says, well, you United States Department of Agriculture says you should eat 6 to 11. Servings of grain per day. Of course, he was about a hundred pounds more than me. Ten years younger and sitting on a heart attack. And I said, when you had your FA calf. What did you do to make it fat? He said it grain, he’s oh crap, you call me. And I totally message you’re sitting on a heart attack. Now keep in mind, I’m not an MD, but about three weeks later, when he had his heart attack, which he refuses to say heart attack, he causes instant his girlfriend says please don’t tell him I told you so. And I said, you know, I’m a rub his nose in it. Grain grain grain is not good for you. Those books have been written and you have to get rid of grain. There’s no such thing as almost gluten free. And I had a sweet darling lady say, well, you can get Ezekiel bread. It’s gluten free. No, I looked at him yesterday. They’re not gluten free. No, no. But I couldn’t tell her she’s a sweetheart. Processed junk food, which is most of us. And people, I have people say, well, I can’t lose weight, and I’m taking all your supplements. Well, you’ve got to change the way you eat. You have to change what you eat, you have to change how much you eat, you have to be realistic. And that’s why I quit friending patients on Facebook is because they would show me pictures of their cinnabon or their meals that they’re eating. And then they grab at me about not losing weight, and it’s like, you know, you eat 14 times more than I do. Artificial sweeteners and colors. People say, well, sweet, sweet darling lady down around Fortnite, so I just talked to her a couple of days ago.

00:10:06 – 00:15:02

She says, well, I’m taking this supplement and I’ll quit it if you want me to, which I love you, Melinda for being that way. But what’s your take and has aspartame or sucralose in it, which actually tricks the brain into depositing four times more fat than sugar and sugar is not good for you in high fructose corn syrup is horrible for you. Wait, wait, wait. You were talking so fast today. I know. So like, man, you’re putting out information here that I’m not absorbing well. What did you say about sucralose against fluid down the Texas way, please? Oh, you want me to talk like Sam Elliott, but my voice won’t go that low. Tell me about sucralose actually being worse for you than sugar. Oh, big time. It tricks your brain. It causes neuro excitatory hormones and it causes you to want more and more and more and more. And basically helps your forces or stimulates your body to put down four times more fat than sugar. And sugar, we, way too much here in America. Okay, so is that like diet drinks? The worst you can do if you’re going to drink a drink, drink the one with high fructose corn syrup, and that is not good for you. Interesting. All these people think they’re losing weight doing diet drinks and things with Superman. This is diet. You need to stay the heck away from it. And tap water contaminants. Hey folks, people say, but I’m drinking well water. I said, have you ever tested it? At one point we lived in a place had 300 foot whales and peeps. Do you drink the wealth of water? I said, not after it not until it goes through reverse osmosis. And I said, why? Because I’ve got a friend that’s a dairy farmer for miles away. I don’t know what he’s putting into water that’s coming to us. And that was another thing I learned from you, just this weekend. You talk about tap water. This is, you know, it don’t have anything to do with weight loss. But it does have to do with wildlife and tap water. I was buying this expensive sugar stuff to give our hummingbirds because they’re coming up now. And you go through it really fast when you get a lot of hummingbirds, we live on the like. And doctor Lewis said just by some sugar and put it in water and give it to them while I was reading the recipe because I’m going to be a CD I have to do it right. And it said. Will you marry me? That’s variable in. So I could handle. And it said to boil the water with the sugar, bowl the water, and then put the sugar in there, I guess, and let it dissolve, and I thought, oh my God, this is time consuming. Maybe I should just buy the expensive stuff. And doctor Liz said, why are you why are you bowling the water? And I said, does that too? He said, well, if you’re using tap water, because it’s even contaminating the hummingbirds. And people know that. So it kills them. And so he said, if you’ll just use reverse osmosis. And don’t use the one with the red, that’s not good for the hummingbirds. Yeah, and it’s like, well, even they tell you that, knowing it’s killing the birds, but we’re over here drinking that like it’s fine. Yeah, if you understood what fluoride did you revolt against the government, I’m not saying you should, but you would. Go ahead. Vegetable oil. Horribly horribly inflammatory. It causes the cells to become rigid and that’s why fish oil borage oil flaxseed oil. Some of the other ones. And it has to be a good quality. But they make the cells more flexible rather than the corn, canal is poison. That’s why fried foods are so bad for you. But the vegetable will cause your cell walls to be rigid and then you become insulin resistance. Now, there’s books written the race in your fats because you have insulin resistance. And I don’t mean to be offensive. By saying that word, but I’m here to help you. And if I can say something that will change your life and oh, thank you, folks. That’s been given us reviews on Google and the three that lined up to do videos and I think there’s three or four more comment. Brian was the first one to do it. Got a he was awesome. I loved him before, but then Allen from Maine. Oh my God, this guy’s incredible. And then we get Debbie from Midland, Texas. And that’s a long way from here. Debbie said, well, my first one is 14 minutes long, but I was telling stories about me and you growing up how you require the rascal. The best that didn’t make it all the way through. Yeah, she grew up with me and still trust me as a doctor. Thank you, Debbie. I love you dearly. But you would not believe what that is done for people to inspire them to get help because, you know, we tell people this all day long, but it’s like, oh yeah, yeah, you’re selling something. We’re selling good health. Yeah, but to have people that it’s changed their lives and they go, they’re kind enough to put that on Google for us. Or a video one coming from Eric down in Fortnite is Texas. And we got one coming from Brenda who’s here local.

00:15:02 – 00:20:00

And we’re talking about videos. Yeah, and it’s like, well, we have new people that are calling in now and they’re like, well, I’ve watched some of these videos, and that is so cool. So you are inspiring other people to get help and help, even if you can’t do it in your own family circle, which we all have problems with. I don’t care from Indiana, said she would do it too. And the thing is, she says, well, I’m telling everybody I can. I said, yeah, well, your influence and people you don’t even know. To get better to get healthier. We need to walk through this life together and be kind and be happy and lift each other up. And let people have help to the best degree they can because this is hard enough. And when you feel bad, you’re depressed, you don’t see the point. There is a point. I’m writing a new I said PowerPoint, but my preacher says that they don’t exist anymore, but I’m riding one of basically if you’re a Christian, why you should be healthier than the rest of the people, not that we can’t get sick too. And the thing is that we were offered to be a national platforms that’s plural platforms to give this talk. So we’ll see. Pray for him. Pray for him. Yeah, I got a rain in some of my thoughts. No, they have to be Christian thoughts. They get to make sure this what we call in or preacher because we’re not sure what you quote sometimes because it’s, I think it’s scripture, but it’s sometimes it’s job and sometimes it’s Shakespeare. Sometimes it’s a distorted scripture. It’s a Texas. But the point is that we should all help each other. So for those of you that’s helping us to help others by inspiring them, God bless you and keep you safe and healthy. And thank you for the maple syrup Allen from Maine. You’re awesome. Oh yeah, I’m excited. The candy. He said I could put it on blue bell. We’re only doing it in small portions. Other things are plasticizers that’s drinking from bottled water and it’s not that we don’t do that, but we, for the most part, just do reverse osmosis. Dairy, which is the casein, the protein and dairy soy and soybean foods that also includes the is this what stops thyroid? Yeah, cows is the cytokine storm. Undiagnosed infections. H pylori. Why would you have H pylori because you don’t have enough stomach acid? Why don’t you have enough stomach acid? Because they poo pooed salt years ago and you need the chloride to make hydrochloric acid. And if you have higher hydrochloric acid, even though you have the symptoms of it, you’re really almost always too low. But if the hydrochloric acid is higher, then you’re going to be able to kill H pylori disease and parasites and strap and all those can create cytokine storms in the thyroid. And he won’t be bloated. Let’s sign of H pylori that you’re completely bloated and you can’t go to the bathroom. You’re very constipated. And water hurts your stomach. If you drink water, and it hurts your stomach, you can always go to your MD and get the H pylori test, and there’s have drugs for that. We use supplements that according to the FDA, we can’t cure anything, but if you throw it in there, God can’t. What you’re saying, like increasing your hydrochloric acid, like we use hydrochloric acid on a lot of patients here. Yeah, digestive essentials and B ten hydrochloric acid. If it’s super low and you can see that on chloride on the lab. Speed your bowel movements up. Yep, and we’re going to get to that too. Other things. Other things that can hurt your thyroid and actually cause inability to lose weight is exercising vigorously. Oh no, you’re supposed to exercise. Yeah, but not bigger asleep because you don’t. Some people don’t give your body time to heal after breaking down that imbalanced hormones. I could go on and on and on and on and on about that. And that’s the indirect and disrupting estrogen mimicking plastics pesticides. And all that. And Janice said the other day, God, is there not a man left in the world, they’re all Sam Elliott, and there’s no more Clint Eastwood. There’s no more John Wang’s. I mean, they’re so rare. There’s not that much masculinity. Well, it’s because most people, men have low testosterone and that takes a long time to clean your body out so you can begin to make more of it. That’s true because we see on lab how low the testosterone is in young men and brandy that works for us here. She sees the lab as it comes through too, and then her grandfather sent his lab in and she goes, oh my gosh, his testosterone tie. She goes, why is his so high and no one else has high testosterone? I said, because of the age. Actually, the older man has higher testosterone. Yeah, but they usually have not enough free.

00:20:01 – 00:25:00

So that’s why we check that and check DHEA. We do a lot of checking, but people that smoke cigarettes, alcohol, especially in excess, fluoride messes with it. Most white breads, but no, that’s not true. Most bread, if it’s not gluten free, I would avoid it like crazy. So well, you know the reason they want bread to start with is usually because they’re full of yeast and they have leaky gut. Leaky gut, I was gonna get to that, which I got so many notes here, I won’t get to about 90% of it, but yeah, you’re absolutely right. But one of the things you should do and the saccharomyces bellardi, what is that? That is a good yeast that goes in. It does not colonize in your GI tract. It grabs it hugs, candida, bad bacteria, yeast fungus virus. Hugs it and when you have your bowel movement, as we increase balm motility, it carries out some of the things. This does interfere with weight loss. This does interfere with proper thyroid function. I’ve seen people that were dying from C diff infection. And again, I’m not saying any of this cures anything. I’m not going to go there, but I’ve put them on massive doses of saccharomyces polarity and within three or four days I said, oh my God, you saved my life. I said, now God, did you’re just giving him something to work with. And I get in trouble for saying God, but I guess I’m not going to stop. Well, that’s over or coming off an antibiotic over antibiotic use too, right? It’s got something to do with using saccharomyces. Yeah, and you know why I’m so smart about this because I had some bad antibiotics and I had to after a bad spider by well for 6 years I bled out a fingertips armpits and places I won’t talk about for 6 years and Janet and I got really good at this because it was either that or me croak and thank God Janet is a good nursemaid and very patient and nice to look at too. But the other thing we’re talking about bowel movements one of the things that absolutely most people could really really benefit from is increasing bowel motility. Well, a lot of people don’t understand why you’re talking about bowel motility. Folks, if you’re eating three meals a day, there should be three trains or bowel movements coming through. So if you had three trains that go through a tunnel, are you getting three that come out on the other side or are you getting one or are you getting one every four or 5 days or maybe all the trains don’t come through or the cars and you have slept behind? Well that’s where the digestive enzymes come in. Most people really, really I’m talking about the large majority should do the modal Sue. Then it has artichoke leaf extract in it. And this is a relatively mild product. But it stimulates bile secretion. Well, what’s it going to do? It’s going to help your liver work more effectively to get rid of the toxins and we had Casey on here one time talking about the two hydroxy four hydroxy 16 hydroxy detoxification pathway. So I won’t go into that. But it enhances the liver function. It helps restore gut motility and improved digestion. And the other thing it has is Ginger root. Let me talk about Ginger root for just a minute. I love Ginger root. And the Asian when I started using that thousands and thousands of years ago, it helps that inflammation cleanses the colon reduces spasms and cramps, stimulates circulation, strong antioxidant, and effective antimicrobial agent. Protects the liver, the stomach, useful for bowel disorders, circulatory problems, arthritis, fever, headache, hot flashes, and man, if you’re wife has a hot flash, don’t talk about it. You might be a flash in a pan if you do that. You sure might. You need to keep that air cold at night too. Indigestion. So that’s why I went after a meal most people of Asian descent will cut off a piece of Ginger and eat it. So the modal suit is a kick, but no tent, no pun intended thing to do. The saccharomyces Bologna. I take some pretty much every day. It’s really incredible. And that once you take away the burden of the excess toxins, your thyroid’s freed up to use the vitamins and minerals that it needs, which we sell a lot of what’s called thyroid essentials. But it’s got the AC and E, the good ones. It’s got the zinc. And yes, there’s plenty of research that says, even if you have Hashimoto’s, which is a thyroid autoimmune disease that up to 200 micrograms is safe. And I know there’s some controversy about that. I’ve had really, really good luck, even with Hashimoto’s putting people on this thyroid essentials they’ve done real good.

00:25:01 – 00:30:04

But zinc is the tracks vitamin, which means up to or tracks mineral, up to 20 times more absorbable. It’s got the selenium right about selenium. 8 pumpkin seeds for zinc and Brazil nuts for selenium and I’ll take zinc and selenium on top of that and my MD says my prostate the size of a 25 year old. And it’s got an acetylcysteine, tyrosine, ashwagandha, Google, resin, which really helps the cholesterol profile to maric root. Right. Is that something that someone can just take without lab? So that’s a safe product that they could take without having to have lab work. And it’s really important because these vitamins and minerals, they’re not just for thyroid, even though it’s kind of what it’s targeting things that the thyroid needs. I will tell you that one does give you energy though. You probably don’t want to take it at night, right? It gives you energy because you’re a high functioning. What is it? High functioning anxiety. I didn’t say it. All right. And it’s got two American it’s like, well, what’s turmeric got to do? Thyroid. You know, maybe in a chiropractor I used to put gobs of people along to marry because of the anti inflammatory effects on the musculoskeletal system, but other things it does. Turmeric fat free radicals. We need more of that. And protects the liver against different toxins, helps it detox much more quickly, inhibits platelet aggregation, which means you’re going to have a healthier cardiovascular system. It is anti inflammatory in the way that it decreases COX-2 enzyme. That’s a deep study. I won’t go there, but it’s really, really good for arthritic conditions. And I just want to start using it as a chiropractor. But it has shown to be stopped proliferation of rapidly dividing cancer cells. I’m not saying scaring cancer folks. But if you throw it in there, that’s why we change the world. Our car before it starts smoking. Janet’s got a really good analogy about that. You can read about it later. But it’s super, super good, even helps with psoriasis. And somewhat in Alzheimer’s and that’s why I take that every night. So I can have good cognitive brain function. Hopefully it’s working. It is so you talked about detox for weight loss. How do you detox for weight loss? Well, that’s different for, you know, we’ve talked about a lot of it. I used the environmental detox because it has the zealot clay, which bonds to a lot of different toxins. It has activated charcoal. The shallow sheet, which is probably, which is the good one, which is basically it’s full of acid and humic acid. And that’ll bind toxins like crazy. So pulling off the toxins and being free from things that make you crave bad stuff. Will help. And the saccharomyces does it too, because as it kills yeast, you’ll notice you don’t want bread as much, right? Yeah, bread, blue bell, Snickers, soft drinks, because it’s really that lowers your zinc and that messes with your taste. So you want to stimulate those taste buds and that’s why we mentioned aspartame and sucralose. And it really, really helps actually, I eat about 90% less sugar than I used to because I don’t have the yeast, but as I’ve told a lot of people, if you have too much yeast, you get brain fog because yeast will steal your thiamine or put out an enzyme to stop your thymine that you don’t get enough of anyway. And when I put people on things for that, they’ll call me within two days to two weeks and say, oh my God. My brain folks gone. And Anna women out there, you know, one of the first things they come in and tell me is that, oh my fingernails are cracking my skin is correct. My menstrual cycles are heavy or they’re real irregular. A lot of really heavy cycles. Some of those are anemic then, which compounds the problem. Or they’re bound, are brittle like they break bones easily. Those are things that you can tell all the outside, mostly. That you may have a problem with your thyroid, right? Yeah, and it takes time. There’s the thing, it can take two years to fix a fatigued adrenals. It takes time, folks. The people that win are the ones that don’t stop digging when there are three feet from gold. They keep going. And that’s why one of our podcasts. We said, for those that want to get well on the 11th hour, usually die at ten 30. You got to keep trying. Every day you’re up here, our job is to help you be healthy enough and have the energetic outlook on life so that you can feel good so that you can go get more accomplished. So you can be a better husband, father, grandfather, doctor, my case.

00:30:05 – 00:33:20

So you mean taking step for one week and then feeling good a few days and then you get a few days that are bad. You don’t stop. I filled up my trip last week. I’ll never have to fill it up again, huh? I know I have stupid analogies, but still it’s consistent action that always wins. Always. And, you know, doctor Liz talks about these tests. I’m telling you these tests are not something your doctor generally runs. They’re going to give you a TSH, I can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen a TSH. Would we run the lab work? And we do it across the United States, so it’s not like you have to come to Texas to do it. You not only get a TSH, you get the T three uptake, like he was talking about. You get 5 different parts of the thyroid, not just a TSH. And for those of you that have been told you may have Hashimoto’s or an autoimmune problem with your thyroid, we can add that thyroid peroxidase antibody on to the lab to see what it’s doing. And we actually have products that will help stabilize your immune system. And then from my perspective, your musculoskeletal system. Hey, this is a thing that holds you up and makes you able to move. There gets better. And cortisol is also a part of that test. So if you heard something in the podcast about exercise and you’re thinking, oh, I hadn’t heard about cortisol. That’s all a part of our test. So go to our website, green wisdom health dot com, click on the health survey, fill it out, it will recommend for you the correct lab panel most closely matched to what you filled out. And that way you don’t have to guess or just get some things and hope you feel better. And doctor Lewis, would you like to leave us with any words of wisdom for this week? My God, he’s out of loss. Now he’s not lost. He’s never had a loss. Here he comes. I’m never at a loss. There are some scripture that says, a wise man for sea danger and takes precautions. But a fool or a simpleton sees the danger and ignores it and suffers the consequences. We’re only here for a short time. I think it’s very important and we make it very where you feel good, where you have that deep restorative sleep where you wake up with twice as much energy as you had. When you wake up and you have the mental capacity, oh my God, my anxiety’s gone. I can go be a better mother or grandmother or better sister. This is not about physical health as much as it is about mental and spiritual health too because you can’t separate want from the other two. Yeah, make life easy again. That’s what it does when you have the right stuff. Yeah, if you focus on the good, it’s funny, the universe multiplies it. You guys have a blessed week. We’ll be here next time on the green wisdom health show. Once again, our show has come to an end, but your hope in your health is only beginning. If you or a loved one are in need of a different outcome and are waiting for a brighter future, take the first step and go to our website and fill out the health survey. Please don’t keep us a secret. If you know someone that could benefit from this podcast, please share the show with your friends and family. You are only one step away from a life worth living.

Rev Up Your Metabolism

Microphone and computer; rev up your metabolism.

Low energy and difficulty losing weight are common issues that most Americans struggle with. In some cases, the cause can be a simple nutritional deficiency or an unknown food sensitivity, but it can be difficult to pinpoint the cause. In this week’s episode, we’ll discuss how to help rev up your metabolism through supplementation and lifestyle changes. We’ll also go over some of Dr. Lewis’ favorite supplements to help support energy levels and detoxification.

Show Transcription

Welcome to the green wisdom health podcast, with Dr Stephen and Janet Lewis, where you will learn about natural solutions to common ailments. And now, here are your hosts doctor Stephen and Janet Lewis. Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the green wisdom health show. I’m Janet Lewis. And I’m doctor Lewis. And we are going to help you rev up your metabolism this week because who doesn’t need energy, weight loss, just all around feeling better. And especially now we’re coming into the spring. It’s time to get cleaned up and get moving, right, doctor Lewis. If you can get me up moving, yes, ma’am. He’s coming along. And he’s developed these fine ideas here of how to do this because he has, he does this himself. Because all of us from time to time experience tiredness and fatigue and coming out of the winter, it seems worse for some reason because we’ve just been sitting on the couch. A lot. And it’s time to get rid of a lot of that stuff. It’s time to shed it, right? Doctor Lewis. Shared is a good word, yes. Yes, okay. So we’re going to help you with tiredness fatigue, drug to lose weight, cold, hands and feet, thinning hair, Lola libido. This depresses me reading it. Irregular periods for women poor slate. For me, I’ve heard PMS belongs to me and also. Bloating and constipation and more. It’s not like an OE hall song. I know. So we want to figure out what’s going on. Get to the root of it and get you feeling better and have a life worth living. So doctor Lewis, what do you want to talk about today as far as that is concerned? Well, we can talk about BMR. Who? BMR. BMR. Yeah, that’s not a big fan revolver, but what is a BMR? It’s called basal metabolic metabolic rate. If I can pronounce it correctly. So tell us about it. Energy sometimes seems to be not enough of it. It seems to be running and hiding from us. For example, the BMR is you’ve got to understand most of your energy is about 50% of it or so is used for the nervous system itself. 27% or so, I think she used for the liver, which is about synthesizing glucose and ketone ketone bodies as fuel for the brain itself. Women usually yeah, I’m going to get hate mail on this one. Women usually have 5 to 10% lower being BMR compared to men and part of that is because when the typical woman has 25% body fat while the typical male has 15% and fat cells in your body for the most part produces no energy at all. Lose weight, people, people want to lose weight, but they’re always looking for the magic peel. There’s not any magic eat, half as much, eat good stuff and eat half as much of it. And I had a sweet lady from Houston come up the other night. She said, but you promised me. I said, I don’t know what I promised you, but I know what you’re eating and it’s not going to work. We should have called this show the magic bullet, right? Yeah, her silver bullet. You’re a product of your choices, and that kind of irks a lot of people. It’s like, well, I didn’t choose this. And I said, yeah, but you’ve made a thousand little bitty choices. That did, you know, I mean, for example, the volume of water, let’s just say, is one, but when you crank it up 1°. From 211° to 212 expands 1700 times. So sometimes you just have to crank it up a little bit to get things going. Sleep decreases BMR by 10%. And Janet, I’m sure I won’t get into some of her notes because I know she’s got notes and sometimes we do funny things like we don’t compare each other’s notes just to see who can stump who. So she usually stumps me. It’s kind of fun. For you. Yeah. So many times people are trying, I don’t know why they think that they are a weight loss clinic. There must be something on Google. I don’t know. Because we’re not overweight and that’s a lot of little bitty choices. And they’ll call here and say, but you do weight loss. I’m like, well, it will turn into weight loss many times if you start doing healthy choices and taking some things and doing low cost lab work and they’re like, what about that shot? I’m looking for that shot. Go to your MD and I’ll tell people I’m a chiropractor.

00:05:02 – 00:10:01

I’m proud of it. I love being a chiropractor. I deal with musculoskeletal system and biomechanical stuff, but if you and I’ll get into that when we talk about mitochondria. If you deal with that and you throw in these supplements to support musculoskeletal system, guess what? Your body uses them all over the body for everything. Every physiological function. As you have so many people want it quick, easy, they don’t want to put any effort into it because when you start telling them that white loss is got to do with more than you just getting a shot because somehow they think that if they get these shots, that they’re magically going to stay thin for the rest of their lives. And I tell them you know that’s like taking speed. That’s what it’s doing. It’s like revving up your metabolism to the point that’s not healthy. We see them be a high risk of heart attack or stroke on lab. But people are still fine with that. Because they’re losing weight. And I guess what we’re trying to teach you here is a lifestyle change altogether as uncomfortable as that may be. But it produces long-term comfort later when you don’t have joints and things that are degenerating and oh my God, if you take care of your body now, it’s just like taking care of your vehicle. Yeah, it’s kind of like when they used to spray the lawn, the lawn, if you took care of it all through the year, it would, it would make a really beautiful lawn in the summertime because you nourished it, but there used to be companies that would go around and just spray the ground green and say, there’s your lawn. And you knew that went along, but it was green and it wasn’t healthy and it didn’t stay. And I guess that’s what we’re trying to teach you is how to make different choices where it stays and it’s not so hard. And it doesn’t come back easy. And I can tell you as a fact, I started taking a different product that we have here in our store thinking that because it was more expensive. It had to be better and it was one of our new deal products and if you don’t know what that is, it helps eat up bad. It takes out some of the estrogen mimickers. Right. For women, if they don’t take enough of it, they get thick through the middle through the belly and then you just this is my story. They get thick through the belly. And their shirts don’t fit like they used to. And I’ve been taking dim ever since I’ve had a hysterectomy about 12, 15 years ago. I guess now. And it got my shape back. It didn’t make you lose weight, but it made your shape come back, so literally I’ve been in a size 8. And she says, I don’t do time. And so I started noticing over the last few weeks. I’m like, I am gaining weight in the middle. And I don’t really grasp wise. I’m getting fat. And he goes, no, you’re not. He said, some of the little skinny girls that worry about it. And I said, well, that’s why we say thin is because we are worried about it. And it took to me when I’m this little, it feels big. And so I started going, what am I doing wrong? And I started looking at our deal. And we have one, you know, we’ve had product changes, which we take all this stuff, it’s not like we’re telling y’all to take stuff that we’re not doing. We have two of them. One’s called CDG ASTRO dim. It’s really expensive. There’s another one that we use a lot more often called dim plus. I never really looked at the label about what had what in it. I just thought it cost more. It’s got to be the better one. I think I’ll just take the big one. So I’ve been taking this big one for about three months now. And the other day, we started comparing the labels on it, and the big one actually has less dim, the registered trademark deal in it than the small dim plus that doesn’t cost as much does. Again, there’s been a lot of product changes because of the supply chain issue. And the calcium D glick right, if you look that up, that increases a different detoxification pathway. Look around a nation of the liver and that’s generally much, much, much more helpful if you have. Family history of cancer of head cancer to help detoxification. Or men’s prostates. The CDG DM, we use more for men. That’s who we get to help somebody testosterone for a man because in all three carbon all that’s in there as well, like a lot of it and that stuff is what’s so expensive. But I didn’t pay attention to that. And I was just taking off state doesn’t hurt. So I was taking half of the amount of DL my use to take is what it came out to be that of what the other product was. And now over about three months, I’m beginning to gain weight. So I had to go back and listen to myself, tell y’all why that was happening. And the minute I realized that I thought, oh my gosh, I’m not hanging enough of the straight deal. And I started doing the dim again, the extra deal, and by golly, it’s beginning to come back off again.

00:10:03 – 00:15:05

And yes, there’s a headache that goes with it. I am suffering through it because it’s actually altering the body’s metabolism, your hormones, but it does make a little bit fast, which we’ll talk about. Totally fine with that. Doesn’t always cause a headache, but it certainly can. And all this time, she told me it was me causing her to have a headache. But see, it’s little stuff like this that people don’t realize of what’s happening. For me, it’s having no hormones. That is the way I keep my hormones balanced is by deal. And people don’t realize that there was a kid the other day that said men’s testosterone levels aren’t lower than what they’re supposed to be. When they’re young. And brandy was arguing with him. It was a relative of hers. And he said, that’s just not true. She said, actually, the older men have higher testosterone levels than the young men. He goes, that’s just not true. She said, will you have those men boobs on you? And he goes so. Lots of guys, my age have that. And she said, because they all have low testosterone. Estrogen. Yes. Environmental estrogen. Estrogen, even in a man. Yeah, so dim goes back into gobbles all that back up and makes you have your shape back. So what we’re trying to teach you here is there are things you can do besides just taking these speed course over to getting his shot, making things worse down the road and having life altering changes in lifestyle here. Right? Right, okay. So the other one that I wanted you to talk about, which is one of our new products because people always associate weight loss with detoxing. And now we finally have something that they can detox with. Deal is one thing that is a detox actually. But there are other products that actually pull out heavy metals in that type of thing. And that’s our new product called enviro detox. So can you tell us why you were so excited about environmental detox? Yeah, I am, but you know, I want to talk about the mitochondria first because they’re the powerhouses in the cells. And it’s different in different cells because this particular part of your body needs higher levels of energy, then you have more of these powerhouses called mitochondria. And they can if you don’t have them, they can’t extract enough energy from the nutrients. And in order to do that, one of the things you have to do is get the bad things. Out of the way. So that it can extract. You know, things can interfere with that. Because the other thing is enzymes and it’s very important in the mitochondrial function by operate kind of in association with oxidative enzymes. The oxidation of the nutrients and form what they do is form carbon dioxide and water. And when they do that, it creates energy and that’s called ATP, adenosine triphosphate. So to help you, and this detox is not something I think you should take all the time. And I’ll tell you why in a minute, but it has a lot clay activated charcoal and something called Shiloh yeet. Yeah, you’ve got to be careful when you look at that and then trying to pronounce you might say something that doesn’t sound particularly good. And one of the things I’m going off on another rabbit trail. One of the things that makes y’all so successful is your faith and your follow through. For example, I talked to Marcia the day and I mentioned her on the last podcast, but she was referred to me by Jennifer and Marsha, you live in Texas, how did Jennifer in, I think, Oregon. And it’s three horse shows now Jennifer’s back in Texas. So it’s people that refer and that bill’s faith and I’m telling you 8 is as important as anything you do. So the zealot clay, notice I changed Jenny’s giving me the I am totally lost. Back to clay. Okay. Well, you know how a dog cocks his head when he’s trying to understand what Janice is doing that. You married me, so. Doctor fiber is very important in dining detoxification. Most of us don’t get enough fiber. Is this in the environmental detox? Yes. Oh, well, you know, I’m talking about in general. I’m being an educator. I hope not an agitator like some people are over there. And so the fiber is like helps bind things and reduce the liver reabsorption of the toxic load. And liver is super, super important. The mineral content is very important because the bad minerals, the bad heavy metals can actually attach themselves.

00:15:06 – 00:20:01

And that’s where the clay comes in. It’s really good to absorb micro toxins, so think mold and fungus. And heavy metals, especially lead and mercury and folks, if you or your kids are drinking sodas or Coke as we call it down to south, everything’s a Coke. You’re getting mercury because it’s full of high fructose corn syrup, and that has mercury in it as well as you get it from other places. But it helps absorb that from the digestive tract and bind to these heavy metals and traps different toxins. And they kind of hold them for safe elimination. Well, I remember the Indian Jews to eat clay to detox, you know, I guess just out of the ground. And it wasn’t just the Indians. A million years ago when I worked at a cattle ranch, pole harford, and F one crosses, they had these people that would come to the edge of the ranch and dig up a certain clay to eat at night. I asked the owner of the ranch, why are they doing it? And they said, I eat it. I didn’t understand. It was probably 16, 17. Seems like that would be, I mean, I realized that it’s pulled off toxins, but that seems like it’s dirty. I know it’s dark, but she didn’t like dirt. I like how this is encapsulated. Oh, it’s clean, dirt. That’s right, I know. So the zealot, it’s purified. So I don’t know, this is the way it shapes, something about being cup shaped, and sort of a magnet for heavy metals. You know, I’m not biochemist. Then it has activated charcoal. And I love, love, love activated charcoal. I entered an email from this wonderful couple in North Carolina. I said, well, do bentonite and charcoal because and I would have said, dude, my environmental detox, but they kind of needed it right then and there. Activated charcoal and we always create on our trips. We carried it to China and so if we got into some yucky stuff, it would help us. It helps in food poisoning that kind of thing. Undesirable toxins. But the problem with charcoal is swati, people don’t do it all the time. It also binds with bad stuff, but it binds with the good stuff too. So it can bind with the minerals. So don’t take it every day. You can take it for a month or two, and then quit. Well, I’m glad you said that because I really like that stuff. But now I’ll quit for a while. Janet has a male attitude. She said, if a little bit is good, more is better. And I’ve seen her overdose on several things. And you know, I can’t tell her anything. She married me, so I just leave it at that. That’s right. And I’m learning from your show here of how to do this. Learning from my show. Thanks. So I’d like to talk about Shiloh jit. And this is the registered trademark one. So it’s good. It’s basically an ancient Arabic powder extracted from the rocks and the Himalayas. I’ll tell people, well, it’s kind of a dark biomass that squishes out through the cracks of the Himalayan mountains. And it’s been noted for its safety and efficacy. We used to have that in a product for testosterone. Right. Except. And here’s another thing with what we do, folks. That was a really, really, really good product, but I just didn’t I just couldn’t believe it’s worth the extra 40 bucks at that particular company charged. We give you great quality stuff, but we try to do it at the most reasonable cost where one light economy says, well, what about the price change? We had several people asking us, well, yeah. 20% because the other company doubled it. Yeah, we can get it back, but that will be an extra $20. They don’t never mind. We’re always shopping. The best stuff, and we’ll never compromise on quality. But there are several different companies out there that will do a really, really good job. But we do the ones that give the best value for what you spend. But there’s some products we never change because we can’t find anything any different. So we just have to go up on the price because there’s just no replacement for it. But if we can find one, we will. But the price is not going up as much as bacon or bullets. Or gas. The strategy really contains different minerals because it’s coming from deep, deep, deep into the himalayans and they say it’s a biomass like the ancient tropical forest. That’s being squished out. But it contains fulvic acid and humic acid.

00:20:01 – 00:25:10

I know you’ve read about that on the Internet and Facebook and all that. And some are better than others, and that’s why we use the registered trademark. It binds to different toxins. Improves endothelial function and helps support a healthy microbiome and your bacteria in your GI tract. Helps better genetic function. Or expression. So it buys with heavy metals pesticides, organic pollutants, we have all of that. But one of the really unique things that it does, it increases the length and the height and the depth of the villa of your intestines. And the villi are little just millions of little finger links, which increases the surface area, which means you can absorb more. Of the nutrients that you put into your body. So that’s one reason it modulates the gut microbiome. So it’s a pretty serious thing. And again, I don’t think you should take it every day all day long. And one of the things with that product, which is also another thing for just losing weight in general, is staying hydrated with water because if you’re going to be using that in your detoxing and then you don’t drink any water that has then gathered up all of these toxins that doctor Lewis is talking about and it has nowhere to go because you’re not flushing it out. It has to be filtered water. Are you just getting lots of chlorine or fluorine and whatever the heck’s in, your normal tap water. So make sure you filter it one way or the other. And even though it may be reverse osmosis in a plastic bottle, try to avoid the plastic bottles. And I know you can’t always, so don’t stress about it, but we put ours in stainless steel as much as we can, bring it to work and take it home and so you’re getting less of the toxins. So that’s half of your body weight in ounces of water is what you’re supposed to be drinking. Not cokes. I would not tea. I wouldn’t say what Janet weighs because I used to say one 32 and she said, I don’t weigh that much, and it’s like, oh, I’m sorry, so let’s just say she weighs one ten, one 20. I like that. Good job. Let’s say one 20, that’d be about 60 ounces of water. Right, that’s right. Can you tell us how sleep helps or keeps you from losing weight? Well, it lowers your BMR. But we need sleep. There are things that crank it up though. I mean, we have to have sleep, you have to get a site deep restored to sleep that you get when you artificially get your vitamin D levels up and of course that helps with calcium going where it should back into the bones. So it helps you muscular skeletal system as well. So how many hours would you say someone needs a regular sleep? Everybody’s different. 7, 8, 9. Okay. So if you’re not getting that, you’re probably not going to lose weight so easily, huh? I’ll be staying at really late. Yeah, I mean, you stunt the detoxification process the time that it’s the body uses to help detoxify. And there’s certain areas that your body works on, the meridians, we talk about the liver being one to three. And if you wake up at one to three L times, probably because your liver is struggling and can’t keep up. And the other thing is you have to understand that people put things in their body that you have to use energy to digest and absorb and won’t tell you who he is, but person that’s probably a little smarter than me. He says, well, I’m not going to take your picture. I’m going to take this other fish oil that I won’t name the name because you get that healthy store and it’s one of the healthiest ones that health food store. He literally had to type four times as much to make the change his own lab and to help his cholesterol triglyceride profile in his HDLs. So we had to use four times as much of that less expensive cheap on us. Well, cheap fish oil. I said, well, you had to use four times as much energy to get it there. So how was that a win and doing four times as much did not make it less expensive? And this man that supposedly is more intelligent than me says, wow, never thought about it. I don’t treat myself, so nobody else should treat themselves either. Which is why we use the lab work, so no one treats ourselves. There’s a difference between subjective and objective in both of them have validity, but you have to put them together. You don’t just use one tool. There’s many different tools that we use to achieve best health. So speaking of that, can you tell me a little bit about why stress stress? Which is your body’s fight or flight response leads to increased production of the hormone cortisol, what does that have to do with losing weight or revving up your metabolism? Well, if it’s super high, the cortisol is super high, super low.

00:25:11 – 00:30:01

You can, because that’s usually an offset of super inflammatory processes. And when you get that stressed, you use way, way too many of your B vitamins that you don’t get enough out of in your diet anyway. And I was reading the other day. Some research about thiamine, which is B one. And it can be, you can be neurotic if you have a lack of that. Anemia depression, sensory neuropathy, sciatica, trigeminal neurologic glaucoma, insomnia, and then the nervousness and anxiety. So when people say I have brain fog, where you probably have too much yeast and that’s causing too much inflammation too much stress. So we kind of override that with been fo domain and then wash you kind of kill off the yeast and replace it with good gut microbiome, then that helps. So that’s thiamine and another fun fact that doctor Lewis told me the other day that he’s probably going to forget to bring well, he wouldn’t bring it up. It’s just something to tell me. And I thought, this is really smart. Women with mornings sickness, a lack of B vitamins. So if you’ve got if you’ve got morning sickness, which I wish I would have known that when I had my children, he and I were not together at that time. Should have been. It should have been, but jeez, I would have skipped 6 months of being sick if I’d have just known about B vitamins. And I was had bad cortisol problems so that makes sense. Well, most of the time. You know, I could say it’s fine, and it might be riboflavin, and many times it’s B 6. That’s one of the reasons why in two rev up your metabolism, I love our B 12 methyl supreme, and I’ve talked about it before. It’s got the riboflavin to be 6. The bow like folate as in Quattro folic, which is the one if you’ve got that 5 MTHFR genetic SNP that will work and then it’s got the right kind of B 12, the methylcobalamin, not the sun, cobalamin. You know, we talk about B 12 and B 6 a lot, so let’s talk about B two, which is the riboflavin. It’s necessary for red blood cell formation. Antibody production, which means boost up your immune system and rev it up. Cell respiration and growth. So that has to do with what we talked about earlier. It helps with the metabolize to metabolize carbohydrates and fats and proteins, but we do too many carbohydrates as a nation. It helps with vitamin a to improve your mucous membranes in the digestive tract. It helps oxygen utilization of the tissues helps with hair skin and nails helps eliminate dandruff and helps absorption of iron and B 6. It’s needed. It’s needed for the metabolism of tryptophan. So if you metabolize tryptophan that turns into 5 hydroxytryptophan, which turns into cert on it, which is one of the neurotransmitters that makes you feel the piece of God. What is B two in? B 12 methyl supreme. Oh, there’s B two in there. It’s kick, but Janet will tell you about 3 o’clock. I forget to take it. It makes that much difference in my energy. And she’ll say, did you take and I said, your woman, you’ve never asked a question you didn’t know the answer to, so how can you tell? She said, you’re not happy. I said, I’m always happy. She’s not as happy. You’re not as animated as you’re not full of energy and I said, okay, well, you know I didn’t take it, or you wouldn’t have asked the question. Why don’t you just say it and still asking a question? I’m being caring. No, she’s not. She’s trying. It’s a trap, guys. When you’re half, I ask you something like that. I promise you, does the spare James make my butt look fat? You are good at those answers. They all look great on you. And you know he’s not telling you that they look great. Now we’re flat out lying. But folks, it’s a trap when your wife asks you that. Speaking of jeans, not looking great on you. We wanted to speak briefly about maybe trying to add a little extra movement into your day besides just sitting on the couch for myself. I have personally started carrying my trash down to our dumpster on our Lake without riding my golf cart. I’m walking it down there with my dog trying to get in the groove of getting a little extra activity. So much time she said it was to keep the dog from being depressed. I didn’t know it’s for Janet. But it does help. You start moving around a little bit more and you start suddenly having a little more energy to do extra things. So we wanted to briefly mention that I know that’s a touchy subject, but getting out and moving a little bit more, not over. We’re doing it, just add a little more activity to your day. We’ll help you with weight loss also. Right? Yes, ma’am.

00:30:01 – 00:32:32

Right. And if you don’t have that energy, I know some people’s immune systems are not very good, so you might consider adding in our product that we have called Immuno Complete because it does help boost your energy some so that you can do those things because when you got a low immune system, you don’t really feel like doing anything extra. But once again, we’re at the end of our show. And if you’re not feeling well or don’t feel like exercising or don’t understand why you’re gaining weight and you’re doing everything right because there are a lot of people that listen to our show ’cause y’all are really smart folks out there that you would pay attention to health, and you can’t figure out what’s causing your white issues. And Dr. Lewis, would you please leave us with some inspiring words for this week’s show? Well, that’s up to you all to decide or judge if it’s inspiring. But I tell people all the time. There’s not enough room in your mind for worry and faith. You have to decide which one you want to live there. Also, I say, I know right from wrong, wrongs really, the fun. They take me wrong. But when you worry, you’re literally betting against yourself. And this leads me to just part of what’s in Psalms 91. It says he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. Psalms 91. Awesome. You guys have a blessed week. We’ll be here next time on the green wisdom health show. Once again, our show has come to an end, but your hope in your health is only beginning. Could This Be Causing Your Weight Gain?

Microphone and computer; rev up your metabolism.

Difficulty losing weight is one of the most common issues plaguing the U.S. There are many things that influence weight such as diet, activity level, hormones, genetics, food sensitivities, environment, and much more. However, one of the lesser-known influences on weight are lectins. Lectins are found in many different foods like beans, peanuts, whole grains, etc. Lectins are often called antinutrients because they are typically difficult to digest and can hinder the absorption of some nutrients. In this week’s episode, Could This Be Causing Your Weight Gain?, we’ll discuss how lectins affect your body, including the thyroid, and what you can do to help make them easier to digest.

All About Probiotics

Yogurt; all about probiotics.

Probiotics are an important part of a supplement regimen and a healthy lifestyle, but just how important are they? They have shown potential in easing the symptoms of conditions like IBS, acid reflux, constipation, and even anxiety and depression. Taking a daily probiotic is one of the best things you can do to help promote a healthy gut, and a healthier gut means a healthier immune system. Let’s learn all about probiotics and take a look at why these bacteria are so important for our health.

Good and Bad Bacteria

Our gut contains an estimated 100 trillion bacteria, which is more than the number of human cells in your body. There are “good” and “bad” bacteria, and different strains have different uses. However, our gut flora (bacteria) can get out of balance, which can contribute to a number of different health conditions like allergies, IBS and other stomach issues, heart disease, depression, anxiety, and potentially obesity and certain cancers. One of the types of “bad” bacteria in our guts that most people are familiar with is candida. Candida is present in everyone in some amount, but the problem begins when it multiplies too much. This usually happens due to a poor diet high in sugar and processed food, which essentially “feeds” the candida, and/or taking antibiotics, especially for an extended period of time, which can decrease the good bacteria in your gut that would normally keep the bad bacteria under control, allowing candida to flourish. This is one reason why probiotics are so important because increasing the number of good bacteria in your gut is crucial to reducing candida and other bacteria that may have gotten out of hand, and for maintaining a good balance.

Neurotransmitters

Neurotransmitters are essentially chemical messegers that send signals throughout the brain and other parts of the body. The science behind neurotransmitters is fairly complicated, so we won’t get into the details of it all, but there are a few neurotransmittes you’re likely familiar with. Serotonin, dopamine, and histamine are a few of the many neurotransmitters in our bodies. Much of these and other neurotransmitters are synthesized in the gut, and research is beginning to show that our gut flora may affect how much of these neurotransmitters are produced. Research suggests that probiotics may have the potential to help decrease the symptoms of depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions, likely through balancing the gut bacteria which may lead to more balanced neurotransmitters. Many antidepressants are SSRI’s, or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, and they work by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin into the brain, meaning there is more serotonin available for use. However, if probiotics are able to increase the production of serotonin in the gut by balancing the gut bacteria, they may prove to be a useful option in treating certain mental health conditions, but more research is needed to prove this.

Immune System

Our gut flora also plays a large role in the health of our immune system. It is estimated that seventy percent or more of our immune system can be found in our gut because the bacteria in our gut plays a large role in the development of white blood cells and antibodies. So, having an imbalance in the gut flora may affect immune system function, potentially increasing your risk of certain infections. There is so much research being conducted now on different strains of bacteria and what roles they play in the development of certain diseases, and researchers have found that a person’s gut flora can actually change in response to certain infections and diseases, and that certain strains of bacteria may contribute to the development of some serious medical conditions like colon cancer.

Probiotic Options

There are many different probiotics with different strains of bacteria and different amounts, but here are a few we really like:

  • Target gb-X – Probiotic supplement specifically designed to support positive mood by influencing the gut-brain axis through the microbiome. It is powered by Ecologic BARRIER, a 5B CFU blend of 9 probiotic strains, that has been clinically shown to decrease overall cognitive reactivity to sad mood, rumination, negative thoughts, and aggressive thoughts.1
  • Probio Lean – Contains a blend of 7 select probiotic species in a cellulose base. Designed to increase intestinal diversity and support healthy metabolism and weight management, each capsule provides 25 billion CFU.
  • Probio Ease – This shelf-stable, 50 billion CFU formulation contains a blend of 7 select probiotic species with Sunfiber®, a low-FODMAP certified prebiotic. This formulation provides comprehensive microbiome, immune, and healthy inflammation support in one convenient capsule.

Generally the best time to take most probiotics is at bedtime before you sleep so that there isn’t food interfering with the probiotic’s activity.

The bacteria in our gut is being researched now more than ever, and it has been shown to play a role in the development or prevention of many different health conditions. We stress the importance of gut health because it plays such a big role in overall health and wellness. Taking a high-quality probiotic, and eating a variety of organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed meats, wild-caught fish, and good fats can go a long way in helping to feed the good bacteria in your gut and reduce the bad.

Cleaning Up A Toxic Liver

Herbs and limes; cleaning up a toxic liver.

Our bodies have to deal with a near constant influx of toxins including pesticides, chemicals, pollutants in our air and water, chemicals in our food, heavy metals, mold, and much more. The liver has many important jobs, and one of them is filtering through these toxins each day, but due to the staggering amount of chemicals the average person encounters each day (which can range from hundreds to thousands of different chemicals), the liver often ends up overworked and dysfunctional. The liver is such an important organ that is necessary for many vital functions in the body, so it’s important to keep it as healthy as we can. Let’s discuss what the liver does, and some things we can do to help clean up a toxic liver.

Jobs of the Liver

The liver is responsible for over 500 tasks like producing bile, filtering blood, producing cholesterol, storing glucose, and many others. Keeping your liver healthy is crucial to overall health, and sluggish livers are a common problem today. We encounter many different chemicals every day in our air, water, food, medications, beauty products, plastics, etc. Our bodies are constantly working to filter through these chemicals to minimize the harm done, but our livers and other organs can’t always keep up. Many people also do not eat correctly and lack vitamins and minerals essential for proper liver function, add this to the toxic load we’re carrying, and it’s a wonder our livers are functioning at all.

Glutathione

Glutathione is an antioxidant that the body is supposed to produce in cells, but production may not be optimal due to genetic mutations and/or environmental factors. We also produce less glutathione as we age, so supplementation is often recommended, especially for older individuals. Glutathione has many functions and benefits, including potentially reducing damage in liver cells, supporting a healthy nervous system, and improving insulin resistance and fat-burning especially in older people. One of the main benefits of glutathione is that it can help reduce oxidative stress, which greatly influences aging, certain chronic conditions, and autoimmune conditions. In autoimmune conditions, the mitochondria of the cells are often damages, and gluathione may help protect the mitochondria from further damage. Supplementing with glutathione may help aid in cleaning up a toxic liver, as well as many other potential benefits.

Symptoms of a Sluggish Liver

When the liver is not working quite as well as it should be, it is often referred to as sluggish. This doesn’t mean it is diseased, just that it is not functioning at the level it should be. Some of the symptoms of a sluggish liver may include:

  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Waking up at 2am-3am for no apparent reason
  • Fatigue
  • Acne and/or rashes
  • Moodiness
  • Headaches
  • Brain fog

This is not an exhaustive list as symptoms can manifest differently in each person, but it is good to be aware of these common ones.

What Can You Do?

The good news is that we can do a lot to promote healthy liver function, but consistency is important. Reducing your exposure to toxins as much as possible is a great first step. Try to avoid synthetic household cleaning products, aerosol products like hairspray and air freshener, and opt for natural products whenever possible. You can also supplement with vitamins, minerals, and herbs that can help promote healthy liver function. Liver Support & Detox and Vital Detox are great products for liver health, and can aid in both phase 1 and phase 2 liver detoxification. Limiting alcohol intake is also important because excessive drinking can cause liver damage and may contribute to some forms of liver disease.

Cleaning up a toxic liver means you should focus on eating a varied diet of fruits, vegetables, high-quality meats, and healthy fats like coconut oil and avocados. You should also make sure the food you eat is organic because pesticides are a major source of toxins, and make sure you are drinking clean, filtered water to avoid the chemicals, heavy metals and other harmful substances found in tap water. Exercising regularly may also help improve liver function, and limiting alcohol intake may decrease your risk for certain forms of liver disease. Your liver is a very important organ and it has a lot of responsibilities, so take good care of it!

Bad Magic – Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners are worse for you than any form of sugar. They can be found in many different foods, drinks, candies, and even some medications. Artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame have been linked to the development of birth defects, neurological diseases, obesity, diabetes, and some cancers. This is why we like to call artificial sweeteners bad magic. In this episode, we’ll discuss the potential dangers of artificial sweeteners, and some good alternatives.

Aspartame is one of the most infamous artificial sweeteners, and accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported by the FDA. A few of the 90 documented symptoms listed in the report as part of aspartame dangers are:

  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Dizziness
  • Seizures
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Nausea
  • Numbness
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Vision Problems
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety Attacks
  • Tachycardia
  • Irritability
  • Vertigo
  • Memory Loss
  • Joint Pain

When aspartame is ingested, the body metabolizes it into two amino acids. It breaks down into phenylalanine and aspartic acid, and is also broken down into methanol. Methanol is considered extremely toxic to humans because it breaks down into formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, and it can have negative affects on the nervous system, vision, and gastrointestinal system. Aspartame is also classified as an excitotoxin. Excitotoxins are compounds that essentially “excite” cells to death. They can stimulate nerve cells and brain cells until they become damaged or die. MSG (monosodium glutamate) is another example of an excitotoxin. Excitotoxins may contribute to the development of neurological disorders like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Are You a Pre-Diabetic?

Microphone and computer; exercising consistent health habits.

The Standard American Diet (SAD) typically consists of foods high in sugar, calories, carbohydrates, and bad fats, and low in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and protein. This diet has been linked to the development of many different health issues like diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and certain cancers. A diet high in sugar is especially harmful to someone with a family history of diabetes as they are usually at a higher risk of developing diabetes. With how common blood sugar issues are, you may be wondering if you are a pre-diabetic. In this episode we’ll discuss some common symptoms of blood sugar issues, and what you may be able to do help balance them.

Symptoms of Hypoglycemia:

  • Intense Hunger
  • Anxiety
  • Sweating, Including Night Sweats
  • Feeling Dizzy or Lightheaded
  • Becoming Fatigued
  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Feeling Irritable
  • Paleness in the Face
  • Headaches
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Brain Fog

One of the best things you can do to decrease your risk of developing diabetes (and for increased health overall) is to cut out processed and sugary foods, and replace them with whole foods like nuts and seeds, grass-fed meats, fruits and vegetables, and good fats like coconut and olive oil. You should also be as active as you can which can mean going to the gym, doing a workout or yoga routine at home, or going for a walk a few times a week. Eating a healthy, balanced diet and exercising regularly may also help you maintain a healthy weight which may further decrease your risk of developing diabetes and other health conditions.
