Effects of Stress

Stress is something most people face on a daily basis, but it may have more of an impact than you think. Chronic stress can contribute to the development of adrenal fatigue, migraines, increased risk for heart attack and stroke, high blood pressure, and even diabetes. Managing stress, particularly every day stress, is vitally important for good health.

Causes of Stress

There are many possible causes for stress, and the causes often vary from person to person. It may have been a stressful traumatic event like the death of a loved one, an injury, or a financial crisis that caused acute stress. Acute stress (short-term stress usually due to a particular event) is less harmful than chronic stress. The effects of acute stress usually go away once the stressful event is over, but chronic stress doesn’t. If you get angry and/or stressed-out every day, or several times a day, then you will likely experience many more negative affects which we’ll discuss further in the next paragraph. This chronic stress tends to cause the most problems because your body and mind never get a break from it. Getting mad and stressed out about traffic, your job, or anything else you deal with daily can have a major impact on your health, so work on letting the little things go.

Effects of Stress

Stress has negative effects on nearly every part and function of the body. Chronic stress can lead to elevated cortisol levels (cortisol is also known as the stress hormone, responsible for the “fight-or-flight” response) which can cause hormonal imbalances, food cravings, low libido, depression and anxiety, and may lead to insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, weight gain, digestive issues, adrenal fatigue, and decreased immune system function. Stress may also exacerbate pre-existing high blood pressure, heart issues, diabetes, depresion, and anxiety. Chronic stress should not be taken lightly, and working on reducing stress in your daily life is very important.

The Link to Diabetes

So, how is stress linked to diabetes? Our latest podcast talked about the relationship between the two, and you can listen to that podcast here. As mentioned above, stress can lead to elevated cortisol levels, which often leads to food cravings and weight gain. Some studies have shown that stress may directly raise blood glucose levels, causing your body to release more insulin to deal with the elevated glucose. If your body is consistently releasing more insulin to deal with high blood sugar from stress or a poor diet, you may start to develop insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a condition in which your body essentially stops responding to insulin, leading to an inability to control blood sugar levels. Unchecked insulin resistance can contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes, so eating a balanced diet and keeping stress under control should be a priority.

Chasing Sleep

Sleep issues are one of the most common things we see people suffering from. Sleep is crucial for good mental, physical, and emotional health, and chronic sleep deprivation can greatly impact your health. There are many potential reasons for the rise in insomnia, with stress and anxiety being the most common. Fortunately, there are many things you can do that may help you sleep better.

Insomnia

Insomnia is often used as a general term for a broad range of sleep issues. It may be trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, not feeling rested upon waking up, unable to fall back asleep after waking up, lying awake for long periods of time during the night, etc. Some people experience this for a night or two every once in a while, which is usually due to a stressful event. However, some people suffer with these problems nearly every night. This can lead to sleep deprivation, which can cause fatigue, food cravings, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. Chronic sleep deprivation can also contribute to high blood pressure and weight gain, and may increase your risk of experiencing a stroke, diabetes, or a heart attack.

Causes

First, let’s talk about what can cause insomnia. As with most problems, sleep issues have many possible causes ranging from adrenal fatigue, to anxiety, to liver sluggishness, etc. When these issues are addressed and improved, it usually becomes easier to fall asleep and the quality of sleep often improves. Trouble sleeping and poor sleep quality may also be due to certain medications, drug and alchol usage, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, asthma, allergies, stress, anxiety, and shift work (switching between working day shifts and night shifts). If you’re consistenly not sleeping well, you should ask yourself these questions: Am I having trouble breathing? Am I waking up during the night, and if so, what time do I usually wake up? Am I getting up more than once to use the bathroom? Answering these questions may help you figure out what’s causing your sleep issues.

Solutions

It can be difficult to find the right solution without knowing what’s causing the insomnia. If it’s due to stress, then practicing stress-reducing techniques, and taking supplements that promote relaxation may help. If the cause is poor liver function, then eating organic foods and taking certain vitamins and herbs that promote liver health and detoxificaiton may improve sleep. This is why getting blood work done can be helpful because it shows problems you wouldn’t have known about.

There are steps you can take to help your insomnia, but determining the cause is crucial to fixing it. So, pay attention to your sleep patterns, stress level, and caffeine and alcohol intake, get your blood work done to see what needs to be optimized, and try out some supplements!

Could Your Symptoms Be Hormonal? What “Hormone Imbalance” Really Means

Hormones are chemical messengers involved in metabolism, growth, reproduction, sexual function, mood and many other processes. When a specific hormone is too high or too low, symptoms can occur—but the phrase “hormone imbalance” is not a diagnosis by itself.

Symptoms often described as hormonal—such as fatigue, weight change, sleep problems, mood changes, low libido, hair changes or irregular periods—can have many possible causes. Some involve the thyroid, ovaries, testes, pancreas, pituitary or adrenal glands. Others may be related to medications, pregnancy, menopause, sleep, nutrition, stress or conditions outside the endocrine system.

The useful question is not simply, “Are my hormones out of balance?” It is: Which clinical pattern, if any, makes a particular hormone test appropriate? This guide explains how symptoms, health history and targeted laboratory testing fit together.

What Does “Hormone Imbalance” Actually Mean?

A true endocrine disorder involves a defined problem with hormone production, signaling or regulation. Examples include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), diabetes, hypogonadism, adrenal insufficiency and Cushing syndrome. Each has its own diagnostic criteria and appropriate testing.

There is no single test that checks every hormone or explains every nonspecific symptom. Hormone levels also vary with age, sex, pregnancy, menstrual-cycle timing, time of day, illness, medications and the laboratory method used. A result should be interpreted with the reference range, the reason for testing and the person’s clinical history.

A normal result does not automatically prove that nothing is wrong, but it also does not mean a hidden hormone disorder must be present. Sometimes a normal result appropriately directs the evaluation toward other possible explanations.

Symptoms Are Clues, Not a Diagnosis

Symptoms that may justify a conversation with a health professional include:

  • New or persistent changes in menstrual cycles
  • Hot flashes, night sweats or vaginal dryness during the menopause transition
  • Unexpected changes in weight, appetite or temperature tolerance
  • Persistent fatigue, weakness or sleep disruption
  • Changes in sexual function, libido or fertility
  • New acne, excess facial or body hair, or scalp hair thinning
  • Unexplained changes in thirst, urination or blood sugar
  • Loss of muscle mass or bone density when clinically unexpected

These symptoms overlap with many nonhormonal conditions. Fatigue, for example, can occur with anemia, sleep apnea, infection, depression, medication effects and numerous other concerns. Weight change may involve eating patterns, activity, sleep, medications, fluid retention, aging or medical conditions. Common Situations in Which Hormones May Be Relevant

Thyroid concerns

Thyroid hormones influence how the body uses energy. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can affect weight, heart rate, digestion, temperature tolerance, mood and menstrual cycles, but symptoms alone cannot diagnose either condition. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is commonly the first blood test, with free T4 and other tests used when the history or initial results support them. PCOS and menstrual-cycle changes

PCOS can involve irregular ovulation, signs or laboratory evidence of higher androgen levels and metabolic concerns such as insulin resistance. There is no single blood test that diagnoses PCOS. A clinician considers menstrual history, symptoms, examination findings, laboratory results and sometimes ultrasound while ruling out other causes.

Irregular or heavy bleeding can also have causes unrelated to PCOS. Bleeding after menopause, bleeding during pregnancy or significant changes from your usual pattern deserve medical evaluation rather than being labeled “estrogen dominance.”

Perimenopause and menopause

During the menopause transition, changing ovarian hormone production can contribute to hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep disruption and mood changes. The pattern varies from person to person. Age, menstrual history and symptoms often provide more useful context than a single estrogen or follicle-stimulating hormone result, because levels may fluctuate during perimenopause.

Low testosterone concerns

Low libido, erectile dysfunction, reduced muscle mass and low energy can have hormonal and nonhormonal causes. The Endocrine Society recommends diagnosing male hypogonadism only when compatible symptoms or signs occur with consistently low testosterone. An initial low result generally should be confirmed with a repeat morning fasting measurement, followed by evaluation of the cause when appropriate.

Blood sugar and insulin

Insulin is a hormone, but diabetes and prediabetes are diagnosed using recognized glucose and A1C criteria—not by symptoms or a general “hormone panel.” If you are trying to understand a laboratory report, see what A1C and fasting glucose results can mean.

A Note About Cortisol and “Adrenal Fatigue”

True adrenal disorders exist and can be serious. Adrenal insufficiency occurs when the body does not make enough cortisol, while Cushing syndrome involves prolonged excess cortisol. These conditions require standard medical evaluation.

“Adrenal fatigue,” however, is not a recognized medical diagnosis, and the Endocrine Society notes that there is no validated test for it. Fatigue, trouble sleeping and feeling stressed are real concerns, but assuming they prove adrenal exhaustion can delay evaluation for sleep disorders, anemia, thyroid disease, depression, medication effects or other causes. Broad saliva testing or “adrenal support” supplements should not replace appropriate medical assessment.

What About Environmental Endocrine Disruptors?

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences describes endocrine-disrupting chemicals as natural or human-made substances that may mimic, block or interfere with hormones. Potential exposures can occur through food and beverage packaging, some personal-care products, pesticides, air, water and other sources.

This is an active area of research, and it is reasonable to make practical choices that reduce unnecessary exposure. But exposure to plastic or fragrance does not establish that an individual has a hormone disorder, and environmental chemicals should not be presented as the most common explanation for every symptom. Claims that a “sluggish liver,” “bad estrogen” or a detox supplement can diagnose or correct a hormone problem are not supported by the information needed for individual clinical care.

How Targeted Hormone Testing Is Chosen

Useful testing begins with a specific question. Before ordering a test, a clinician may consider:

  • The symptom pattern, duration and severity
  • Age, pregnancy possibility, menstrual-cycle stage and menopause status
  • Prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements and hormone use
  • Personal and family medical history
  • Time of day or cycle timing required for the test
  • Previous laboratory results and whether they need confirmation
  • Other common causes that should be evaluated first

A broad panel is not automatically better. Testing a hormone without a clear clinical reason can produce incidental or difficult-to-interpret results. Conversely, a targeted follow-up test may be useful when symptoms, history or an initial result point toward a specific question.

When to Seek Prompt Medical Care

Do not wait for wellness testing when symptoms may require urgent evaluation. Seek prompt medical care for heavy or unusual bleeding with dizziness, fainting, chest pain or shortness of breath; bleeding during pregnancy; bleeding after menopause; sudden severe pelvic or testicular pain; severe weakness or confusion; or any rapidly worsening symptoms. If symptoms seem hormonal, write down when they began, how they have changed, relevant cycle or life-stage information, current medicines and supplements, and any prior laboratory results. This makes it easier to identify patterns and decide which questions deserve testing or medical evaluation.

Avoid starting hormone products or changing prescribed treatment based on symptoms alone. Hormones and hormone-active supplements can have risks, interactions and effects on fertility, bleeding, blood clots, cardiovascular health and other conditions. Decisions should be individualized with an appropriate health professional.

Gut Health and Osteoporosis

Around 54 million Americans have osteoporosis or are at risk of developing it, and many other people are dealing with bone and teeth loss due to age, poor nutrition, and even gut health. Most people don’t consider gut health when they think of osteoporosis and other bone issues, but it can actually play a large role. More and more research is confirming that almost everything is connected to the gut, so let’s see how poor gut health can contribute to bone loss and osteoporosis.

Nutrition

Good nutrition is the key to good health, but very few people consistently get enough nutrients. The vitamin and mineral content of produce has been decreasing throughout the last few decades, and some studies have found you must eat six to eight times as much of the same fruit to get the nutrition you would have gotten from one serving just fifty years ago. With most people struggling to eat even one serving of fruits or vegetables a day, you can see how easy it is to get nutritional deficiencies. This is one of the reasons why we believe so strongly in supplements. You can still get some nutrients from fruits and vegetables, and it is still important to eat them, but it’s difficult to get enough vitamins and minerals from food grown today, this is why supplementing with certain vitamins and minerals is often necessary for optimal health.

Calcium and Vitamin K

When you think of bone health you probably think of calcium, but calcium is not as important to bone health as many people think. Calcium is only one of several things you need to build and maintain strong bones, and getting too much calcium without the other necessary vitamins and minerals can actually be harmful. Having too much calcium in your blood may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis by hardening areas of plaque in your arteries, which also leads to an increased risk of heart attacks. High calcium levels may also weaken your bones, and increase your risk of developing kidney stones. However, getting enough vitamin K in your diet through food and/or supplements may help prevent calcium from damaging your arteries by keeping calcium in your bones, and keeping it out of blood vessel, but it’s difficult to get enough vitamin K through diet alone, and elevated calcium levels are a fairly common issue. This is why it’s important to get blood work done every six months to a year to ensure your calcium levels are staying within a healthy range.

Calcium and Magnesium

Magnesium also plays an important role in bone health (osteoporosis is a listed side effect of magnesium deficiency) by helping calcium get absorbed, this is why calcium-magnesium supplements are recommended more often than supplements containing just calcium. Without enough magnesium, calcium can end up not getting absorbed into the bones properly, which can cause it to accumulate in joints and certain areas of soft tissue, potentially leading to a type of arthritis. Magnesium deficiency is fairly common (deficiencies in general quite common today), and may cause symptoms like irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, fatigue, muscle twitches, weakness, high blood pressure, etc. Magnesium is also essential for heart health, and many people have reported better sleep, less heart palpitations, less anxiety and depression, and fewer muscle cramps after supplementing with magnesium.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is another vitamin that’s necessary for bone health, among many other things. Almost every patient we see has a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiencies can be caused by little time spent in the sun, poor diet, and poor nutrient absorption. Vitamin D is necessary for the proper absorption of calcium and for maintaining healthy levels of calcium and phosphate. Supplementing with Vitamin D may help improve bone and tooth health, immune system function, and thyroid function.

What About Gut Health?

After all this talk of the nutrients you need for bone health, you may be wondering what your gut has to do with it, but it’s also very important. Your stomach and intestines are responsible for digestion, nutrient absorption, and waste elimination, but if one or more of these processes are not optimal, you can end up suffering from bone loss and other issues. Here’s why: Your stomach must be able to break down foods into nutrients, but most people don’t have enough digestive enzymes, or enough stomach acid to properly break down their food. If food isn’t broken down correctly, your body cannot absorb all of the nutrients. So, you could be eating tons of organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed meat, and good fats, but still be suffering from deficiencies. Leaky Gut

Autoimmune diseases, allergies, depression, anxiety, cancer, and so many other health issues are much more common today than they were just fifty years ago, but why? There are several causes for the rise in chronic illness, but poor diet and exposure to environmental toxins are arguably the main reasons. Poor nutrition, continuous exposure to toxins in our food, air and water, and overuse of prescription and over-the-counter medications all contribute to a condition known as leaky gut syndrome. This is the name given to a condition in which the lining of the gut becomes permeable, allowing food particles and toxins to pass into the bloodstream which causes the body to mount an immune response. So many people struggle with this condition, but most have no idea.

Leaky Gut

An immune response might not sound like a bad thing, but leaky gut can cause a continuous immune response. Food particles, toxins, and other substances that you consume are meant to stay in your gut. Your body has a digestive lining that is supposed to only allow certain things to pass through, but this lining can become “stretched out”, allowing things to pass through into your bloodstream that were meant to stay in your gut. Your body recognizes these substances as invaders that it must get rid of, causing it to attack. When your immune system is constantly attacking something it can get end up getting “tired”, or it could lose its ability to differentiate between bad and good cells. This can lead to autoimmune problems as your body can no longer tell what is healthy tissue, so it may begin attacking healthy tissue like the thyroid gland, joints, etc.

Food particles that manage to get through the gut lining are also recognized as invaders, and the immune response can come in the form of allergies to certain foods. This is how leaky gut is linked to allergies, and it may help explain the sharp increase in food allergies/sensitivities in recent years. Leaky gut can also lead to poor nutrient absorption, making it difficult for your body to break down and absorb vitamins, minerals, and other vital nutrients.

Symptoms

Leaky gut can cause many different symptoms, and they may mimic the symptoms of other illnesses. Often times, people are diagnosed and treated for an issue that leaky gut actually caused. Leaky gut is often mistaken for IBS or other digestive problems due to the overlapping symptoms, and IBS often does not get better until leaky gut is addressed. This is why it is necessary to identify the root cause of your issues so you can truly heal them, instead of just managing the symptoms.

Leaky gut can cause many symptoms like fatigue, headaches, eczema, acne, weight gain, digestive problems, bloating, food allergies, and many others. If leaky gut is left untreated it can worsen and contribute to more severe problems like autoimmune diseases, IBS and many others.

Treatment

Leaky gut is treatable, but you have to be dedicated and consistent. The first step is to eliminate foods and drinks from your diet that contribute to leaky gut and inflammation. This includes grains (especially the gluten-containing grains wheat, barley, triticale, some oats, and rye), conventional dairy products as in dairy products you find in a typical grocery store, sugar, GMO products, non-organic produce, and processed food. You should drink mostly water and unsweet tea (no soda), but you should consider the quality of your water. Tap water typically contains heavy metals, chlorine, fluoride, and even antibiotics and other medications that were unable to be filtered out. These and other harmful substances found in tap water should be eliminated, so investing in a high-quality water filter or finding a source of clean water is important.

After eliminating these foods and drinks, you should replace them with nutrient-rich and easy-to-digest foods and liquids like organic fruit, cooked organic vegetables (raw vegetables are usually harder to digest), bone broth, fermented vegetables, good fats like olive oil and coconut oil, grass-fed meats, and wild-caught fish. These foods are an important of a healthy diet, but they are essential when trying to heal leaky gut.
