Welcome to the green wisdom health podcast, with doctor Steven and Janet Lewis, where you will learn about natural solutions to common ailments. And now, here are your hosts doctor Stephen and Janet Lewis. Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the green wisdom health show. I’m Janet Lewis. And I’m doctor Lewis. And we are here to help you with all of your weight loss and thyroid questions I know that you have. This week’s episode is called the thyroid connection to weight loss because many of you out there are struggling with weight loss and it is the season for bikinis. So we want to make sure that we’re able to get into those and look really good. So we’re going to tell you today some shortcuts or maybe some long cuts to getting that body back the way you want it to be and what the thyroid has to do with it because we all know that thyroid’s got everything to do with weight loss, doesn’t it, doctor Lewis? I don’t know about everything, but it’s certainly a huge, huge player there. So what is it you would like for us to learn today about thyroid? What does it got to do with you losing weight? Well, first of all, it usually is the thyroid and the statistics vary depending on the book you read or the research or the doctor you talk to, but I’d say about two out of three or three out of four people. That we do are low cost lab work on probably three, four, 7 have a suboptimal thyroid. Well, wait a minute. When you say low cost lab work, why do you run lab work? I mean, don’t the doctor do it. I mean, haven’t they been told they’re okay? Why do you do that? I’m just asking. Okay. Asking for a friend. Well, you know, I love the whole profession, the medical profession and chiropractic may be in a chiropractor. Of course, I look at it more holistically, structure function, nerf supply. But let me just tell you a story. There’s this really wonderful medical doctor that came in. He wanted to talk to us and Janet and I was off gallivanting around the country like we do a lot in the RV. And Janet, my sweet darling a little wife says, I do not want to talk to this MD. I said, I’ll talk to him. He’s an ass guy. I’ve never met an MD that wasn’t a nice person and have good intentions. And so he came in, he was a real quiet shy, soft spoken, very, very nice man. He says, you’re getting our patients well, and we don’t understand how you’re doing it. And I said, well, God’s a lot smarter than you and me. And we’re trying to help people. We’re just doing it differently. I just throw in nutrients that your body uses for the greater good. And he says, okay. And so I asked Janet to go get this particular lab. Once she got here, my sweet wife said she didn’t want to talk to the sim day, but I said, now you’re here, what do you tell the stock for about thyroid? And she gave me the look. I have no idea what the look is. You eyes out there, have no idea what the look is. In any way, this light he had a three point something on her TSH. And that’s what most people run TSH, which is not thyroid. That is the thyroid stimulating hormone. It comes out of the pituitary in the brain. And it was a three. And the range goes up to 4.5 in Janice says, what would you do with this person? He says nothing. She’s my patient, too. I don’t do anything. It’s well within the range it’s normal. And I’m thinking it’s not normal, it’s common. There is a difference. And Janet says, well, if it doesn’t go down around 1.5, that means the brain is putting out the signal and the thyroid’s not using it. And she will be overweight. Can’t lose weight and be thyroid crazy. And he said, I’m noticing my practice, it has to be about a two or below before people can begin to lose weight. And then it said, what would you do with this T three uptake, which was the 27? He’s just not, and that’s within the range from 24 to 35. And Janice says, well, that’s usually environmental estrogen mimickers, which we’ll get to the toxins in why that stops or slows our weight loss. She says, why is it it’s okay down to 24, but holy Jesus, you’ve got to treat it at a 23. She said it’s just degrees of stress caused by estrogen mimicking plastics pesticides fire retardants et cetera. And if she’s got this, this light will be thyroid crazy. You can’t live whether she’ll be fat. Can’t lose weight and she’ll have no desire for sex and a guy wonderful man. Uncross his arms took his glasses off leaned across the desk and looked at Janet in the eyes and said, can I bring my wife in to see you? Yeah, and you know the reason I knew that was a problem is because of my own personal health issues of them telling me that my thyroid was right from a hysterectomy, they looked at it and said, oh no, your thyroid looks great. I thought then why am I a size 12 and I’ve gone from a 130 pounds up to a 149 in like 6 months.

00:05:06 – 00:10:05

I thought there is something not right here, but that’s fine, which led me on a journey to figure out why. And like doctor Lewis said the different parts of the thyroid, the TSH is just your brain getting the signal. Yes, getting a signal. That’s not your true thyroid function. My thyroid function, which probably don’t mean much to you right now, but when I had my lab run, it was a 2.8 free T three. It looks okay. That looks in the normal range, but I was huge at that point. Optimizing it to over three caused me to go back down to a size 6 8 and back to my 130 pound weight. So that is a huge difference in on a marker that doesn’t look that big. And I’m confused here because I used to tell people Janice 5 foot 432 pounds. She says, Steven, I’m not that fat. Of course. A lot of pounds. Might have been when she was thyroid crazy, but I would never say that. And that’s what it causes. It causes things like slow metabolism, heart functions, not right. So you have heart palpitations. Poor digestion. So you have more constipation issues. You have a lack of energy. And so many people are suffering with that right now. It’s like, no energy. Their appetite is not good. But there’s another part to that though. It usually if you feel better after exercise, you probably have a low thyroid. Well, you’d have said low energy. What’s the other part of that? The other party is if you feel worse after exercise, that’s usually a sign of your adrenals have in poor function. How interesting you have to nourish incorrect adrenal function before taking on your thyroid healing because the thyroid will not heal until you have your adrenals working. They run off of each other. They can’t HPA axis. Thyroid pituitary. You know, it’s cool. That’s why I like it. That’s why I like listening, aka being a part of the show. Because I learned things from you that I’ve never heard before. It’s like this little dictionary of knowledge. It’s usually slamming Perkins. I’ve never heard that about the exercise thing about what is it again if you want to exercise? Well, if you feel better after exercising, you probably have a low thyroid. But if you feel worse, it’s probably you need to heal your adrenals and the problem is here’s the issue folks. If you want to get well, you have to commit time to it because not everybody gets well because there are limitations, physiologically, there’s limitations to time. And you have to give your body time and people unfortunately, people quit way too soon. It usually takes a couple of years just to fix your adrenals because you have to get rid of a lot of the stressors, which can be mental that you create yourself, but it’s many, many times it’s mold, you’re don’t know you’re getting it. It’s the story we tell about us being crop dusted in Mississippi and Louisiana, two different times. Thyroid things that cause thyroid inflammation or the cytokines that create that in an unrelenting cytokine storm can lead to cancer and a lot of other things. The best thing you can do for your thyroids give up grains and people say, I had a friend says, well, you United States Department of Agriculture says you should eat 6 to 11. Servings of grain per day. Of course, he was about a hundred pounds more than me. Ten years younger and sitting on a heart attack. And I said, when you had your FA calf. What did you do to make it fat? He said it grain, he’s oh crap, you call me. And I totally message you’re sitting on a heart attack. Now keep in mind, I’m not an MD, but about three weeks later, when he had his heart attack, which he refuses to say heart attack, he causes instant his girlfriend says please don’t tell him I told you so. And I said, you know, I’m a rub his nose in it. Grain grain grain is not good for you. Those books have been written and you have to get rid of grain. There’s no such thing as almost gluten free. And I had a sweet darling lady say, well, you can get Ezekiel bread. It’s gluten free. No, I looked at him yesterday. They’re not gluten free. No, no. But I couldn’t tell her she’s a sweetheart. Processed junk food, which is most of us. And people, I have people say, well, I can’t lose weight, and I’m taking all your supplements. Well, you’ve got to change the way you eat. You have to change what you eat, you have to change how much you eat, you have to be realistic. And that’s why I quit friending patients on Facebook is because they would show me pictures of their cinnabon or their meals that they’re eating. And then they grab at me about not losing weight, and it’s like, you know, you eat 14 times more than I do. Artificial sweeteners and colors. People say, well, sweet, sweet darling lady down around Fortnite, so I just talked to her a couple of days ago.

00:10:06 – 00:15:02

She says, well, I’m taking this supplement and I’ll quit it if you want me to, which I love you, Melinda for being that way. But what’s your take and has aspartame or sucralose in it, which actually tricks the brain into depositing four times more fat than sugar and sugar is not good for you in high fructose corn syrup is horrible for you. Wait, wait, wait. You were talking so fast today. I know. So like, man, you’re putting out information here that I’m not absorbing well. What did you say about sucralose against fluid down the Texas way, please? Oh, you want me to talk like Sam Elliott, but my voice won’t go that low. Tell me about sucralose actually being worse for you than sugar. Oh, big time. It tricks your brain. It causes neuro excitatory hormones and it causes you to want more and more and more and more. And basically helps your forces or stimulates your body to put down four times more fat than sugar. And sugar, we, way too much here in America. Okay, so is that like diet drinks? The worst you can do if you’re going to drink a drink, drink the one with high fructose corn syrup, and that is not good for you. Interesting. All these people think they’re losing weight doing diet drinks and things with Superman. This is diet. You need to stay the heck away from it. And tap water contaminants. Hey folks, people say, but I’m drinking well water. I said, have you ever tested it? At one point we lived in a place had 300 foot whales and peeps. Do you drink the wealth of water? I said, not after it not until it goes through reverse osmosis. And I said, why? Because I’ve got a friend that’s a dairy farmer for miles away. I don’t know what he’s putting into water that’s coming to us. And that was another thing I learned from you, just this weekend. You talk about tap water. This is, you know, it don’t have anything to do with weight loss. But it does have to do with wildlife and tap water. I was buying this expensive sugar stuff to give our hummingbirds because they’re coming up now. And you go through it really fast when you get a lot of hummingbirds, we live on the like. And doctor Lewis said just by some sugar and put it in water and give it to them while I was reading the recipe because I’m going to be a CD I have to do it right. And it said. Will you marry me? That’s variable in. So I could handle. And it said to boil the water with the sugar, bowl the water, and then put the sugar in there, I guess, and let it dissolve, and I thought, oh my God, this is time consuming. Maybe I should just buy the expensive stuff. And doctor Liz said, why are you why are you bowling the water? And I said, does that too? He said, well, if you’re using tap water, because it’s even contaminating the hummingbirds. And people know that. So it kills them. And so he said, if you’ll just use reverse osmosis. And don’t use the one with the red, that’s not good for the hummingbirds. Yeah, and it’s like, well, even they tell you that, knowing it’s killing the birds, but we’re over here drinking that like it’s fine. Yeah, if you understood what fluoride did you revolt against the government, I’m not saying you should, but you would. Go ahead. Vegetable oil. Horribly horribly inflammatory. It causes the cells to become rigid and that’s why fish oil borage oil flaxseed oil. Some of the other ones. And it has to be a good quality. But they make the cells more flexible rather than the corn, canal is poison. That’s why fried foods are so bad for you. But the vegetable will cause your cell walls to be rigid and then you become insulin resistance. Now, there’s books written the race in your fats because you have insulin resistance. And I don’t mean to be offensive. By saying that word, but I’m here to help you. And if I can say something that will change your life and oh, thank you, folks. That’s been given us reviews on Google and the three that lined up to do videos and I think there’s three or four more comment. Brian was the first one to do it. Got a he was awesome. I loved him before, but then Allen from Maine. Oh my God, this guy’s incredible. And then we get Debbie from Midland, Texas. And that’s a long way from here. Debbie said, well, my first one is 14 minutes long, but I was telling stories about me and you growing up how you require the rascal. The best that didn’t make it all the way through. Yeah, she grew up with me and still trust me as a doctor. Thank you, Debbie. I love you dearly. But you would not believe what that is done for people to inspire them to get help because, you know, we tell people this all day long, but it’s like, oh yeah, yeah, you’re selling something. We’re selling good health. Yeah, but to have people that it’s changed their lives and they go, they’re kind enough to put that on Google for us. Or a video one coming from Eric down in Fortnite is Texas. And we got one coming from Brenda who’s here local.

00:15:02 – 00:20:00

And we’re talking about videos. Yeah, and it’s like, well, we have new people that are calling in now and they’re like, well, I’ve watched some of these videos, and that is so cool. So you are inspiring other people to get help and help, even if you can’t do it in your own family circle, which we all have problems with. I don’t care from Indiana, said she would do it too. And the thing is, she says, well, I’m telling everybody I can. I said, yeah, well, your influence and people you don’t even know. To get better to get healthier. We need to walk through this life together and be kind and be happy and lift each other up. And let people have help to the best degree they can because this is hard enough. And when you feel bad, you’re depressed, you don’t see the point. There is a point. I’m writing a new I said PowerPoint, but my preacher says that they don’t exist anymore, but I’m riding one of basically if you’re a Christian, why you should be healthier than the rest of the people, not that we can’t get sick too. And the thing is that we were offered to be a national platforms that’s plural platforms to give this talk. So we’ll see. Pray for him. Pray for him. Yeah, I got a rain in some of my thoughts. No, they have to be Christian thoughts. They get to make sure this what we call in or preacher because we’re not sure what you quote sometimes because it’s, I think it’s scripture, but it’s sometimes it’s job and sometimes it’s Shakespeare. Sometimes it’s a distorted scripture. It’s a Texas. But the point is that we should all help each other. So for those of you that’s helping us to help others by inspiring them, God bless you and keep you safe and healthy. And thank you for the maple syrup Allen from Maine. You’re awesome. Oh yeah, I’m excited. The candy. He said I could put it on blue bell. We’re only doing it in small portions. Other things are plasticizers that’s drinking from bottled water and it’s not that we don’t do that, but we, for the most part, just do reverse osmosis. Dairy, which is the casein, the protein and dairy soy and soybean foods that also includes the is this what stops thyroid? Yeah, cows is the cytokine storm. Undiagnosed infections. H pylori. Why would you have H pylori because you don’t have enough stomach acid? Why don’t you have enough stomach acid? Because they poo pooed salt years ago and you need the chloride to make hydrochloric acid. And if you have higher hydrochloric acid, even though you have the symptoms of it, you’re really almost always too low. But if the hydrochloric acid is higher, then you’re going to be able to kill H pylori disease and parasites and strap and all those can create cytokine storms in the thyroid. And he won’t be bloated. Let’s sign of H pylori that you’re completely bloated and you can’t go to the bathroom. You’re very constipated. And water hurts your stomach. If you drink water, and it hurts your stomach, you can always go to your MD and get the H pylori test, and there’s have drugs for that. We use supplements that according to the FDA, we can’t cure anything, but if you throw it in there, God can’t. What you’re saying, like increasing your hydrochloric acid, like we use hydrochloric acid on a lot of patients here. Yeah, digestive essentials and B ten hydrochloric acid. If it’s super low and you can see that on chloride on the lab. Speed your bowel movements up. Yep, and we’re going to get to that too. Other things. Other things that can hurt your thyroid and actually cause inability to lose weight is exercising vigorously. Oh no, you’re supposed to exercise. Yeah, but not bigger asleep because you don’t. Some people don’t give your body time to heal after breaking down that imbalanced hormones. I could go on and on and on and on and on about that. And that’s the indirect and disrupting estrogen mimicking plastics pesticides. And all that. And Janice said the other day, God, is there not a man left in the world, they’re all Sam Elliott, and there’s no more Clint Eastwood. There’s no more John Wang’s. I mean, they’re so rare. There’s not that much masculinity. Well, it’s because most people, men have low testosterone and that takes a long time to clean your body out so you can begin to make more of it. That’s true because we see on lab how low the testosterone is in young men and brandy that works for us here. She sees the lab as it comes through too, and then her grandfather sent his lab in and she goes, oh my gosh, his testosterone tie. She goes, why is his so high and no one else has high testosterone? I said, because of the age. Actually, the older man has higher testosterone. Yeah, but they usually have not enough free.

00:20:01 – 00:25:00

So that’s why we check that and check DHEA. We do a lot of checking, but people that smoke cigarettes, alcohol, especially in excess, fluoride messes with it. Most white breads, but no, that’s not true. Most bread, if it’s not gluten free, I would avoid it like crazy. So well, you know the reason they want bread to start with is usually because they’re full of yeast and they have leaky gut. Leaky gut, I was gonna get to that, which I got so many notes here, I won’t get to about 90% of it, but yeah, you’re absolutely right. But one of the things you should do and the saccharomyces bellardi, what is that? That is a good yeast that goes in. It does not colonize in your GI tract. It grabs it hugs, candida, bad bacteria, yeast fungus virus. Hugs it and when you have your bowel movement, as we increase balm motility, it carries out some of the things. This does interfere with weight loss. This does interfere with proper thyroid function. I’ve seen people that were dying from C diff infection. And again, I’m not saying any of this cures anything. I’m not going to go there, but I’ve put them on massive doses of saccharomyces polarity and within three or four days I said, oh my God, you saved my life. I said, now God, did you’re just giving him something to work with. And I get in trouble for saying God, but I guess I’m not going to stop. Well, that’s over or coming off an antibiotic over antibiotic use too, right? It’s got something to do with using saccharomyces. Yeah, and you know why I’m so smart about this because I had some bad antibiotics and I had to after a bad spider by well for 6 years I bled out a fingertips armpits and places I won’t talk about for 6 years and Janet and I got really good at this because it was either that or me croak and thank God Janet is a good nursemaid and very patient and nice to look at too. But the other thing we’re talking about bowel movements one of the things that absolutely most people could really really benefit from is increasing bowel motility. Well, a lot of people don’t understand why you’re talking about bowel motility. Folks, if you’re eating three meals a day, there should be three trains or bowel movements coming through. So if you had three trains that go through a tunnel, are you getting three that come out on the other side or are you getting one or are you getting one every four or 5 days or maybe all the trains don’t come through or the cars and you have slept behind? Well that’s where the digestive enzymes come in. Most people really, really I’m talking about the large majority should do the modal Sue. Then it has artichoke leaf extract in it. And this is a relatively mild product. But it stimulates bile secretion. Well, what’s it going to do? It’s going to help your liver work more effectively to get rid of the toxins and we had Casey on here one time talking about the two hydroxy four hydroxy 16 hydroxy detoxification pathway. So I won’t go into that. But it enhances the liver function. It helps restore gut motility and improved digestion. And the other thing it has is Ginger root. Let me talk about Ginger root for just a minute. I love Ginger root. And the Asian when I started using that thousands and thousands of years ago, it helps that inflammation cleanses the colon reduces spasms and cramps, stimulates circulation, strong antioxidant, and effective antimicrobial agent. Protects the liver, the stomach, useful for bowel disorders, circulatory problems, arthritis, fever, headache, hot flashes, and man, if you’re wife has a hot flash, don’t talk about it. You might be a flash in a pan if you do that. You sure might. You need to keep that air cold at night too. Indigestion. So that’s why I went after a meal most people of Asian descent will cut off a piece of Ginger and eat it. So the modal suit is a kick, but no tent, no pun intended thing to do. The saccharomyces Bologna. I take some pretty much every day. It’s really incredible. And that once you take away the burden of the excess toxins, your thyroid’s freed up to use the vitamins and minerals that it needs, which we sell a lot of what’s called thyroid essentials. But it’s got the AC and E, the good ones. It’s got the zinc. And yes, there’s plenty of research that says, even if you have Hashimoto’s, which is a thyroid autoimmune disease that up to 200 micrograms is safe. And I know there’s some controversy about that. I’ve had really, really good luck, even with Hashimoto’s putting people on this thyroid essentials they’ve done real good.

00:25:01 – 00:30:04

But zinc is the tracks vitamin, which means up to or tracks mineral, up to 20 times more absorbable. It’s got the selenium right about selenium. 8 pumpkin seeds for zinc and Brazil nuts for selenium and I’ll take zinc and selenium on top of that and my MD says my prostate the size of a 25 year old. And it’s got an acetylcysteine, tyrosine, ashwagandha, Google, resin, which really helps the cholesterol profile to maric root. Right. Is that something that someone can just take without lab? So that’s a safe product that they could take without having to have lab work. And it’s really important because these vitamins and minerals, they’re not just for thyroid, even though it’s kind of what it’s targeting things that the thyroid needs. I will tell you that one does give you energy though. You probably don’t want to take it at night, right? It gives you energy because you’re a high functioning. What is it? High functioning anxiety. I didn’t say it. All right. And it’s got two American it’s like, well, what’s turmeric got to do? Thyroid. You know, maybe in a chiropractor I used to put gobs of people along to marry because of the anti inflammatory effects on the musculoskeletal system, but other things it does. Turmeric fat free radicals. We need more of that. And protects the liver against different toxins, helps it detox much more quickly, inhibits platelet aggregation, which means you’re going to have a healthier cardiovascular system. It is anti inflammatory in the way that it decreases COX-2 enzyme. That’s a deep study. I won’t go there, but it’s really, really good for arthritic conditions. And I just want to start using it as a chiropractor. But it has shown to be stopped proliferation of rapidly dividing cancer cells. I’m not saying scaring cancer folks. But if you throw it in there, that’s why we change the world. Our car before it starts smoking. Janet’s got a really good analogy about that. You can read about it later. But it’s super, super good, even helps with psoriasis. And somewhat in Alzheimer’s and that’s why I take that every night. So I can have good cognitive brain function. Hopefully it’s working. It is so you talked about detox for weight loss. How do you detox for weight loss? Well, that’s different for, you know, we’ve talked about a lot of it. I used the environmental detox because it has the zealot clay, which bonds to a lot of different toxins. It has activated charcoal. The shallow sheet, which is probably, which is the good one, which is basically it’s full of acid and humic acid. And that’ll bind toxins like crazy. So pulling off the toxins and being free from things that make you crave bad stuff. Will help. And the saccharomyces does it too, because as it kills yeast, you’ll notice you don’t want bread as much, right? Yeah, bread, blue bell, Snickers, soft drinks, because it’s really that lowers your zinc and that messes with your taste. So you want to stimulate those taste buds and that’s why we mentioned aspartame and sucralose. And it really, really helps actually, I eat about 90% less sugar than I used to because I don’t have the yeast, but as I’ve told a lot of people, if you have too much yeast, you get brain fog because yeast will steal your thiamine or put out an enzyme to stop your thymine that you don’t get enough of anyway. And when I put people on things for that, they’ll call me within two days to two weeks and say, oh my God. My brain folks gone. And Anna women out there, you know, one of the first things they come in and tell me is that, oh my fingernails are cracking my skin is correct. My menstrual cycles are heavy or they’re real irregular. A lot of really heavy cycles. Some of those are anemic then, which compounds the problem. Or they’re bound, are brittle like they break bones easily. Those are things that you can tell all the outside, mostly. That you may have a problem with your thyroid, right? Yeah, and it takes time. There’s the thing, it can take two years to fix a fatigued adrenals. It takes time, folks. The people that win are the ones that don’t stop digging when there are three feet from gold. They keep going. And that’s why one of our podcasts. We said, for those that want to get well on the 11th hour, usually die at ten 30. You got to keep trying. Every day you’re up here, our job is to help you be healthy enough and have the energetic outlook on life so that you can feel good so that you can go get more accomplished. So you can be a better husband, father, grandfather, doctor, my case.

00:30:05 – 00:33:20

So you mean taking step for one week and then feeling good a few days and then you get a few days that are bad. You don’t stop. I filled up my trip last week. I’ll never have to fill it up again, huh? I know I have stupid analogies, but still it’s consistent action that always wins. Always. And, you know, doctor Liz talks about these tests. I’m telling you these tests are not something your doctor generally runs. They’re going to give you a TSH, I can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen a TSH. Would we run the lab work? And we do it across the United States, so it’s not like you have to come to Texas to do it. You not only get a TSH, you get the T three uptake, like he was talking about. You get 5 different parts of the thyroid, not just a TSH. And for those of you that have been told you may have Hashimoto’s or an autoimmune problem with your thyroid, we can add that thyroid peroxidase antibody on to the lab to see what it’s doing. And we actually have products that will help stabilize your immune system. And then from my perspective, your musculoskeletal system. Hey, this is a thing that holds you up and makes you able to move. There gets better. And cortisol is also a part of that test. So if you heard something in the podcast about exercise and you’re thinking, oh, I hadn’t heard about cortisol. That’s all a part of our test. So go to our website, green wisdom health dot com, click on the health survey, fill it out, it will recommend for you the correct lab panel most closely matched to what you filled out. And that way you don’t have to guess or just get some things and hope you feel better. And doctor Lewis, would you like to leave us with any words of wisdom for this week? My God, he’s out of loss. Now he’s not lost. He’s never had a loss. Here he comes. I’m never at a loss. There are some scripture that says, a wise man for sea danger and takes precautions. But a fool or a simpleton sees the danger and ignores it and suffers the consequences. We’re only here for a short time. I think it’s very important and we make it very where you feel good, where you have that deep restorative sleep where you wake up with twice as much energy as you had. When you wake up and you have the mental capacity, oh my God, my anxiety’s gone. I can go be a better mother or grandmother or better sister. This is not about physical health as much as it is about mental and spiritual health too because you can’t separate want from the other two. Yeah, make life easy again. That’s what it does when you have the right stuff. Yeah, if you focus on the good, it’s funny, the universe multiplies it. You guys have a blessed week. How Does Gluten Affect the Thyroid?

Microphone and computer; the blood sugar rollercoaster.

Gluten sensitivities are becoming more common, but most people don’t know if they have a sensitivity. Continuing to eat foods you are sensitive to can lead to a wide variety of problems, and it can even contribute to some serious thyroid conditions. When you have a gluten sensitivity, the body identifies the gluten particles as foreign bodies that need to be attacked. Unfortunately, the protein portion of gluten – called gliadin – looks similar to thyroid molecules, so the body may mistakenly attack parts of the thyroid, potentially leading to thyroid issues. In this week’s episode, we’ll go over how gluten affects the thyroid, and why it’s important to avoid it.

Early Warning Signs of a Thyroid Problem

Microphone and computer; early warning signs of a thyroid problem.

Thyroid conditions are more common now than ever, with some experts believing this is mostly due to the high number of environmental toxins we are exposed to every day. There are many chemicals that are classified as endocrine disruptors (which means they interfere with hormones and can cause hormonal imbalances) that can be found in our air, water, and many cosmetic products. There are other things that can impact thyroid health like diet and lifestyle, and in this week’s show we’ll go over thyroid health and how you can support the thyroid, as well as discuss some possible early warning signs of a thyroid problem.

Thyroid – The small gland that makes a BIG difference!

Microphone and computer; exercising consistent health habits.

Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are conditions that affect the thyroid gland and can mean an underactive or overactive thyroid. The thyroid is a small gland that does a lot; responsible for releasing hormones that are crucial to many important functions like regulation of metabolism, heart rate, breathing, and body temperature. It also effects cholesterol levels, mood, energy, and weight management. Additionally, here are some key differences between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism that we’ll discuss in this episode.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothryoidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is underactive and does not produce enough thyroid hormones.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism:

  • Persistent fatigue, lethargy, or depression
  • Low motivation to exercise
  • Moodiness, Anxiety
  • Brain fog, trouble concentrating, forgetfulness
  • Intolerance to cold, frequently feeling chilly
  • A hoarse voice
  • Unexplainable weight gain
  • Constipation, bloating and other digestive issues
  • Muscle weakness, aches or pains, other discomforts
  • Dry hair and skin

The most common causes of hypothyroidism include an autoimmune condition like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, radiation therapy, an iodine deficiency, and certain medications.

Hyperthyroidism

Conversely, hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is producing too much of certain thyroid hormones (T4 for example).

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism:

  • Insomnia, sleep troubles
  • Nervousness, symptoms of anxiety
  • Racing heart
  • Eyes that appear large and sometimes bulge
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Muscle weakness
  • Multiple bowel movements
  • High amounts of perspiration
  • Thin, brittle hair

Some common causes of hyperthyroidism include an autoimmune condition like Graves’ Disease, inflammation of the thyroid, and consuming too much iodine.

Tachycardia

Tachycardia generally refers to a resting heart rate that is higher than one-hundred beats per minute. Some potential reasons for an elevated heart rate are stress, anxiety, physical exertion through exercise or a physically demanding task, anemia, anger, certain medications, heart damage, congenital heart problems, high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, and some other medical conditions. Heart conditions are more common now than ever, and tachycardia is one of many. Let’s take a look at some reasons for an elevated heart rate, and what we can do about them.

Stress, Anxiety, and Anger

Your emotional state can affect your body in many different ways. One of the most common parts of your body that is affected by strong emotions is your heart. Stress, anxiety, and anger can increase cortisol levels and trigger a release of adrenaline. This release of hormones can lead to an elevated heart rate, faster breathing, feeling of a tight chest, and some research suggests that these strong emotions may also contribute to inflammation. This can be particularly damaging when someone experiences these emotions every day. Many people are experiencing chronic stress, anxiety, and/or anger due to things like a demanding career, an unhappy marriage, family issues, financial struggles, etc. This prolonged release of cortisol and other hormones can wreak havoc on the body, decrease adrenal gland function, and may increase a person’s risk of heart disease, stroke, and other medical conditions. However, if a person notices a high resting heart rate and is not experiencing stress, anxiety, or anger, other causes should be considered.

Medical Conditions and Medications

Some medical conditions can cause an elevated heart rate, even at rest. Anemia is a medical condition in which iron levels are too low, which decreases the amount of red blood cells, leading to lower oxygen levels in the blood. This can cause an elevated heart rate because your heart is trying to compensate for the low blood oxygen by pumping blood throughout the body faster. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, which can also lead to an elevated heart rate. There are many other conditions that can cause an elevated heart rate, so it’s best to check with your doctor if you have an elevated resting heart rate to rule out any medical conditions. Certain medications can also cause an increase in heart rate, so you should be familiar with the potential side effects of any medications you are taking.

Heart Healthy Habits

The health of your heart largely depends on your diet and lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet, engaging in light exercise, staying hydrated, practicing stress-reducing techniques, and taking supplements formulated to support heart health can all go a long way in keeping your heart healthy. Processed foods should be avoided as much as possible, and your diet should consist mainly of organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed and free-range meats, and high-quality fats like those found in coconut oil and olive oil. You should also do your best to drink around 64 ounces of clean, filtered water every day.

Some supplements that may help improve heart health include:

  • Orthomega – High-quality fish oil supplement providing EPA and DHA.
  • Bergamot BPF – Contains bergamot orange extract, which may help balance cholesterol levels and improve liver function.
  • Methyl CPG – Contains a high-dose of vitamin B12, and is designed to help decrease homocysteine levels in the body.

Taking care of your heart is so important, and we’re here to help you learn how!

Thyroid Health and Hypothyroidism

Thyroid issues are much more common now than they were in previous years, and there are a number of possible causes ranging from inflammation to radiation exposure. Thyroid issues are often difficult to treat, but there are many things you can start doing now that can help promote healthy thyroid function. Making dietary and lifestyle changes that promote thyroid health is crucial for people with a diagnosed thyroid problem, but it can also benefit people who currently don’t have a thyroid issue as it may help to prevent problems in the future.

Functions of the Thyroid

The thyroid gland is responsible for releasing certain hormones that are used throughout your body. When the thyroid is underactive or overactive it can lead to issues in different parts of the body, which can make it difficult to determine the root cause by looking at physical symptoms alone, this is why checking thyroid levels regularly is so important. The importance of a healthy, functioning thyroid is hard to exaggerate. The hormones it produces are responsible for regulating your weight, breathing, heart rate, nervous system, body temperature, and bone loss, among other things. If your thyroid is not functioning correctly, it’s difficult for the rest of your body to function correctly.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism refers to a condition in which the thyroid is producing less hormones than it should be. IHypothyroidism is more common than hyperthyroidism (a condition in which the thyroid gland produces more hormones than it’s supposed to), but they are both serious conditions. The causes of hypothyroidism are often hard to determine, but it may be caused by inflammation, stress, certain medications, nutrient deficiencies including an iodine deficiency, or even exposure to radiation. Drinking tap water may also interfere with thyroid function due to certain chemicals and heavy metals like fluoride, bromide, chlorine, and aluminum that are often present in tap water. Prescription medications have also been found in tap water because medications are often excreted through urine, and it’s very difficult to fully filter them out of the water. All of these things can not only lead to thyroid dysfunction, but can cause problems in other parts of your body as well. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help promote healthy thyroid function and good overall health.

What Can I Do?

The first thing you should do when trying to treat or prevent any kind of health problem is to optimize your diet. Cutting inflammatory foods out of your diet is crucial for good thyroid health and good health overall. Inflammatory foods include fast food, heavily processed foods, soda, and many others. Your diet should be centered around organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed and pasture-raised meats, high-quality fats like coconut oil and olive oil, and filtered water. You should also look into switching to all-natural beauty products, soap and household cleaners. Consuming enough iodine is also very important for thyroid health. You can get iodine from fish and other seafood, seaweed, or by taking a supplement containing iodine.

Supplements

The main supplement we recommend for promoting healthy thyroid function is Thyroid Essentials. Thyroid Essentials contains vitamins A, C, and E, iodine, selenium, zinc, turmeric root extract, ashwagandha root extract and a few other ingredients. Thyrotain is like a multivitamin for your thyroid, so taking Thyrotain along with making diet and lifestyle changes can go a long way in promoting thyroid health.

So, eat a diet high in organic fruits and vegetables, high-quality meats and fats, and clean water. You should also switch to all-natural products wherever possible, practice stress-reducing techniques like yoga or meditation, and give Thyroid Essentials a try. You can also get lab work done and Dr. Lewis can see how well your thyroid is functioning so he can give you more specific recommendations. The diet and lifestyle choices you make every day are some of the biggest influences on your health, so make sure they’re good choices!

Learn True Health Podcast with Ashley James – Thyroid

Learn True Health Podcast with Ashley James

Dr. Lewis recently had the opportunity to be a guest on the Learn True Health Podcast with Ashley James where he spoke about thyroid issues and what you can do about them. Thyroid issues are becoming more and more common, so learning how to prevent and treat them is more important than ever. You can listen to that podcast here.

Ashley James is a health influencer and she has hundreds of podcasts and lots of information on how to be a healthier you, physically and emotionally. These podcasts and articles can be found on her website here.

Thyroid Issues

It seems as though everyone knows someone who has a thyroid issue, it may be themselves, or a friend or relative, but there’s no denying that thyroid problems have become much more common in recent years. There are many contributing factors like stress, environmental and dietary toxins, poor nutrition, hormone imbalances, etc., but the good news is that you can do something about it. Diet is the biggest thing to consider changing if you’re concerned about thyroid health, but iodine, fish oil, and certain vitamins and minerals are crucial to achieving and maintaining thyroid health.

Iodine

Adequate iodine levels are necessary for the thyroid to function properly, and iodine absorption is often inhibited by fluoride, bromine, and chlorine. These chemicals are commonly found in tap water, and they can bind to the iodine receptors, preventing your body from being able to absorb the iodine it needs. It is often necessary to eliminate these chemicals from your diet before supplementing with iodine so your body can properly absorb it.

Fish Oil

Fish oil should be a part of everyone’s diet/supplement plan due to the many benefits. Fish oil may help balance cholesterol levels, lower triglycerides, lower blood pressure, and it may even improve the symptoms associated with certain psychological disorders because it supplies the brain with the fat it needs to function correctly. We likely still haven’t discovered all the benefits of fish oil, but we know it’s incredibly important to your thyroid and overall health.

Vitamins and Minerals

Taking a high-quality multivitamin can be beneficial because it provides a wide-range of nutrients, many of which you likely aren’t getting enough of through diet alone. Vitamin deficiencies are very common today due to stress and environmental toxins that deplete certain vitamins and minerals, and diets that are high in processed food that contains few nutrients. Another big cause of the increasing deficiencies are gut imbalances. When the good and bad bacteria in your gut aren’t balanced, or if you have leaky gut (many people do without realizing it) or digestive disorders, then you probably aren’t able to absorb much of the vitamins and minerals you do eat and/or supplement with. This is why the first steps to healing usually include cutting out fake food (processed, packaged food with long ingredient lists), eating lots of organic fruits and vegetables, and healing your gut through the use of probiotics, celery juice, and supplementation. Fixing these issues can greatly improve your overall health, and may help prevent or lessen thyroid issues.

Be sure to listen to Dr. Lewis speak on Learn True Health Podcast with Ashley James to learn more about thyroid issues and what you can do.

Thyroid Facts and Follies

Hello, and welcome to this week’s show. I’m Janet Lewis.

And I’m Dr. Lewis.

And we are bringing you another exhilarating show this week on thyroid facts and follies. We are Green Wisdom Health, home of the low-cost lab work, and Dr. Lewis has actually written a book about thyroid called the “Thyroid Sniper” – available on Amazon – where he explains to you in a short story the facts and follies on thyroid. But we thought if you guys couldn’t read the book he would be here in person today to give you some of the information that we know that you’re just dying to hear.

I find it funny they called the Facebook thing “Shoot’n Straight” and then the book is called the “Thyroid Sniper”.

“Thyroid Sniper.”

I don’t know what you’re talking about, Janet. What’s the reference to guns there?

I think it’s the big mustache. In case you’ve not seen him, he has a huge mustache so he looks like a-

Not quite as good as Kurt Russell.

Yes, Wyatt Earp. Pretty close to Wyatt Earp in the-

I wish, I wish.

And we live in East Texas, so there’s a lot of hunting going on around here. And it could have something to do with the Texas slang and the stories that he always correlates to something back in the country.

I’ve still got a whole book of Stephen-isms, and I promise you we’re not going to get around to them today.

With that being said, I know we’ve done some other shows on thyroid, but since we are experts in this field, Dr. Lewis hears so many questions about thyroid, and we hear so many misconceptions about it. We see people’s labs that they always tell ’em they’re fine and they’re nowhere close to being fine. In fact, in Longview, or the town we live in, there’s really only one doctor here that we actually send patients to because we know he understands thyroid when they need something beyond our natural medicine help.

He may not be the only good one in Longview, but he’s the only one that we know of for a fact.

Yeah, we know of a whole lot of other ones that have no clue. So for every one out there that’s doing a great job with the thyroid, there are a bunch of them that are pretty clueless about it.

Yeah, ’cause people come in and say, “Well, my doctor says it’s fine.” And I said, “If it’s fine why are you here?” Whoops, that goes into a Stephen-ism there. It’s like, why is America so sick? And, Janet will kind of have to reel me in and keep me off the rabbit trails.

Well, go down one now and explain to them some of the things that you want to talk about, which I know one of your facts about the thyroid was – which I thought was pretty interesting – is that an underactive thyroid, so that’s a sluggish thyroid-

Right, right.

May put you at an increased risk of a heart attack even if your thyroid is only slightly underactive. That’s pretty scary that that correlates to the heart. Not many people realize that it goes to organ health.

The thyroid has to do with pretty much everything in the body. I think it’s good to get it working correctly. I like to use crazy analogies, and I tell people, “Well yeah, your thyroid’s like you’re on I-20 in the rain.” For those of you that don’t understand I-20 in the rain, it’s notoriously dangerous. I said, “You’re like you’re running 140 miles an hour with your adrenals, but your thyroid’s running 35. Somebody is gonna crash and burn.” So you’ve gotta get it – I don’t care if you’re going down the interstate – you need to go down at a proper speed that’s safe for the weather conditions.

That’s a good analogy. We actually had a lady in our office yesterday that we told her a few years back that she had a thyroid problem. And she said, “Well I took it to my doctor, and my doctor said I didn’t.” Dr. Lewis gave that analogy about being on the highway going really slow. He said, “Well, their ranges are so big you could actually be going down the interstate at 20 miles an hour and that would be okay, but does that mean you’re really at optimal speed?” So, that’s what we’re saying with the thyroid is you really need to make sure it’s optimal because with it being slightly off like it said, you could be increasing your risk of heart attack.

Well, I’m gonna go down so many rabbit trails. The first way to fail is don’t get started. The second way to fail is get started and quit.

I hear this all the time: Well, I read on Google da, da, da, da, da. And it says something different than you. I had a lady that came back after a few years and she was in here yesterday and a couple days before and she said, “But I just don’t know who to listen to.” And I said, “Well, if you’re not gonna listen to me, why are you here?” I said, “You’ve been listening to other people for years and it didn’t work. And you’ve heard me say success leaves clues, but so does failure.”

That’s why God gave us a discerning spirit. I tell that to most of my patients: Listen with your discerning spirit. If your discerning spirit says yes, this is the way to go. Don’t jump off the train, just stick with it, it takes time. But, I’ve got a lot to talk about so maybe Janet will keep me down off the rabbit trails, but I doubt it.

There’s different research and you know you can get on Google and read all kinds of research and most of them can be interpreted incorrectly, but some of the research says there’s up to 40% of the people in America have poor thyroid function. I personally think it’s more than 40% – at least that’s what we see on the labs. It’s linked to health conditions.

These people with IBS and Crohn’s, which we have incredible results with other products, can be linked and very often is linked, to a suboptimal thyroid. Fibromyalgia. One of the most sad moments I’ve ever had is a woman looked at me across the desk and said, “Dr. Lewis, do you believe in fibromyalgia?” And I said, “Yes ma’am.” And she lit up ’cause apparently nobody had taken her serious.

It can be acne, it can be all kinds of skin conditions, it can be infertility. Many, many times it’s autoimmune diseases, and there’s a lot of autoimmune diseases. And you think you can get it out of your food, the answer is no, no, no you cannot. I don’t care how good you eat, although you can’t eat out of the typical trough of America. Okay, Janet’s giving me the stink eye on that one, too. You can’t eat the normal SAD, standard American diet, and be healthy but even those that are eating healthy you need to supplement ’cause you have so many nutrients that are missing in even the organic foods.

So, it’s very incredibly important that you understand the thyroid and what to do about it. It produces hormones that control pretty much every function in your body, if not all of them. And the types are: T3, that’s triiodothyronine, free T3; thyroxine, which is T4; and then there’s a T2 that’s not very well understood. But the T4, you’ve got to have it converted, for the most part, in the liver and that’s one of the things we talk about. You have to have optimal liver function because that’s where it takes these bad chemicals, the bad estrogens, and twists it around to make it a safe place. But it converts T4 to T3. T3 is the one that does the work. On most labs it needs to be a three or higher.

I talked to a lady up in somewhere up in the Northeast, yesterday and hers is T4, but she didn’t want to do our products. She said, “Well, it just didn’t taste good.” I said, “We’re not doing it for taste. We’re doing it because it’s gonna change your life and make you feel 20 years younger.” This lady’s about my age. And I’m telling you, feeling 20 or 30 years younger makes a huge difference, and you can achieve that because I’m sitting here. I’m so hyper I can’t hardly sit here, and that’s because Janet works on my thyroid. She gives me advice because you’re not smart enough to fix yourself. I’m not smart enough to fix myself. You need outside help.

You can read the Bible all day long, and that’s a good thing that you should, but you still need a spiritual leader. I’ve got several of those in my life and they do a really good job. They’re wonderful people, men and women.

But your T3 levels, the one that does most of the work, is disrupted by nutritional imbalances. So you have to have extra nutrition from good supplements. It’s interrupted by allergens, infections, stress – and that can be all kinds of different stresses – and that can lead to a lot of complications including cancer. So when people come in with a swollen thyroid, or a hot thyroid, or a goiter I tell them, “You need to see your medical doctor.” I’m a chiropractor. I’m good at nutrition, but there’s no shame in using Western medicine and the so-called alternative.

Let’s talk about thyroid for a minute and the toxins. There’s so many plastics every day that the government has established an average daily amount that we ingest. That’s pretty bad because nobody should ingest it. But it’s in our systems – we cannot avoid it – and that’s plastics and phthalates. They hook onto the cell parts and they kind of gum up the works, so to speak. They accumulate in the different organs including the thyroid, but it triggers cancer of prostate, breast, lung, thyroid, on, and on, and on, and on. So, that’s the plastics that even the government has recognized is a problem to find out how much we ingest every day.

There have been different, and many, scientists that prove that these plasticizers, or the phthalates, they outgas from even the plastic wrap around your cookies – yeah, I got a look on that one because I bought some the other day – the plastic trays that most of the meats, and fruits, and vegetables are encased in. They migrate into the food itself. And that’s from the United States Department of Health and Human Services. That’s not Dr. Lewis’ opinion.

The problem is they accumulate and it doesn’t just cause a hypothyroid or thyroid cancer, it can cause all kinds of different diseases. So how do we know if it’s your thyroid causing the autoimmune disease, or the autoimmune disease going backwards and creating the thyroid issue? So it can cause these toxins that I talk about all the time, it can cause or help create … I always say diseases, they’re not diseases, they’re adaptive physiology that your body’s adapting to a bad situation. I think that song’s been written and sung, too.

It can contribute to autoimmune diseases like lupus. We have a lot of people that come in that have lupus. High blood pressure – holy cow, we’ve got a bunch of those. Cardiac arrhythmia – man, we’ve had a couple of those this week. I always tell them, well number one, go see a cardiologist. That’s a good thing. But, usually it’s like a magnesium. Magnesium, I think there’s 13,000 different receptor sites on the genes or something ridiculous like that. But these toxins, and that can cause a thyroid problem, can lead to heart attack. Ooh, Janet just said that one. Rheumatoid, inflammation of the thyroid.

Did you know that many, many times your high cholesterol can be because your thyroid’s not working correctly? And then you’re put on statin drugs – and that’s between you and your medical doctor – but if you read about statins you might reconsider it. The book I like the best is called “The Cholesterol Hoax”. The second, probably an easier book for the average person, is called “The Great Cholesterol Myth”. That’s a really good one. Then there’s another one, “The Cholesterol Lie”. And then there’s more and more about cholesterol, so educate yourself.

Parkinson’s disease. I had one of the sweetest guys in the world sitting here yesterday with Parkinson’s and a lot of other problems. I told his wife, I said, this, this, this, and this. And she looked at her husband and says, “We’re doing it all.” I said, “God bless you ma’am. You might keep him another five, 10, 20 years I hope with probably less problems.”

All these things can cause the hypertrophy of the prostate, multiple sclerosis – yes, that is very possibly linked to thyroid issues – osteoporosis, heart failure, joints wearing out like arthritis, all kinds of degenerative diseases. Not because you’re getting old, but you’ve accumulated these toxins that’s wreaking havoc on your thyroid and you’re 40 and feel like you’d like to die. Or, you can be my age and feel 30 years younger than you are. Now, it takes a lot of work to do that, but it’s worth is.

So, I did two things. I got started and I stuck with it. And I’m always learning something new. There’s a huge rapid rise in thyroid medication. Actually, I think it’s the third most commonly prescribed medication in the United States of America. That should tell you something. I could go on, and on, and on. I’ve got about 40 different notes on just the toxins and how it messes with the thyroid, but I guess I won’t go there ’cause we’ll run out of time. Which is normal for me, huh?

Where do you want to go now, Janet, somewhere?

Yep.

Where do you want to go for the weekend? Or are we talking about podcast?

Well, I guess do you want to go fast or slow? Can you? I guess we can give the differences and what fast and slow are.

Yeah, you can do that.

Okay. Basically, whenever you have a very sluggish thyroid the symptoms are: You’re very lethargic, no energy, extreme fatigue, you’re depressed, you don’t want to exercise.

Fatigue and depression can be from other things, but if they’ve diagnosed you with that, for goodness’ sake, let your doctor or me look at your thyroid. Good point, Janet.

Thank you. Feeling like you want to fall asleep as soon as you sit down when you don’t have anything to do.

Whoops.

Hmm. Weight gain.

Whoops.

Easy weight gain or difficulty losing weight. See, it’s not your fault. Make sure you have your thyroid checked. And if you had it checked and they tell you it’s fine, send it to us and let us look at it and make sure they’re right. I’m sorry.

Yeah, really. Find somebody you trust-

Yeah, find somebody you trust.

Use that discerning spirit. That’s a really good thing to always listen to.

Rough and scaly skin, or dry, coarse, and tangled hair.

Yeah, if your skin looks like a lizard it might be a thyroid, or you might be a redneck, as Jeff Foxworthy would say.

Hair loss. You see the women with patches of hair that are coming out, or they-

Alopecia.

Yeah, or they’re receding, like their hairline is receding back.

It’s probably just stress of living with her husband, but stress is stress.

And their eyebrows, like half of their eyebrow on the ends are not there.

It’ll start out with the outer part and generally move in.

Yeah, so your hair on your eyebrows gets less. That could be a sign of a thyroid, and that you’re very sensitive to cold. So, if you can’t stand being in the cold you really need to get your thyroid checked.

On the other hand, if you are having an overactive thyroid, that’s where it’s sped up, the thyroid is moving too fast. You’ll have feelings of being restless, nervous, or emotional, you’re very irritable, and you sleep poorly because you can’t stay asleep, difficulty concentrating.

What’d you say? I forgot.

Frequent bowel movements, so your trains are coming through the tunnel way too fast.

Woohoo!

In women irregular menstrual periods, weight loss. So sometimes people can be too skinny. And they actually, I know women are going, really, you can be too skinny? Well, the women that are too skinny really don’t like it. They’re just as unhappy that way as they are the other direction.

And men, that’s a good time to be quiet.

That’s right. Rapid, forceful, or irregular heartbeats. We hear that a lot, actually, like their heart’s just beating out of their chest. And then also lack of menstrual periods in women, is a sign of the overactive thyroid. Protruding eyes.

Yeah, that’s usually Grave’s disease like Mrs. Barbara Bush had. Some of the things – we’re talking about toxins – it can be a food that you’re allergic to that creates a histamine reaction and when that’s released, because you’re either sensitive or allergic to that food, that can cause problems with the adrenals. Which, if you’ve listened to us very long that’s a direct hookup to messing with the thyroid.

Thyroid has a lot to do with the neurotransmitters. And neurotransmitters like the happy hormones – if you ain’t got ’em, you’re not happy. It has a lot to do with serotonin and dopamine for the most part. Ladies and gentleman, listen to this list: If you have a serotonin deficiency – and this is out of the GI tract, but it’s very intricately hooked to the thyroid – if you’ve lost pleasure in hobbies and interests. I asked Janet that. I said, “Am I depressed because I don’t have any kind of – I’m trying to avoid it – but I don’t have any interest in guns.”

Is that because, are you saying that could be a lack of serotonin?

Yep. Feeling overwhelmed, in a rage, paranoia, depression, not enjoying life, depression with lack of sunlight. You know those people that get the short nights in Alaska. Loss of enthusiasm, not enjoying your favorite foods – well, I’m good there – not enjoying your relationships, feeling of dependency on others. And this generally will make you more susceptible to pain, so that’s usually serotonin deficiency. And, again, you have to get your thyroid fixed and we have things that can help your body create serotonin from your GI tract, and we know the supplements, the nutrients that it takes to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Now, dopamine is a little bit different, even both of these – serotonin and dopamine – have to do with pleasure, but they are different. So a dopamine deficiency could be feeling worthless, feeling hopeless, self-destructive thoughts, inability to handle stress. See, it’s similar to serotonin, but different. Anger and aggression under stress, wanting to become isolated, distracted easily – I’m thinking, well I got distracted on that one.

He forgot what he was gonna say.

Inability to finish tasks, need for caffeine to feel mentally alert. Yeah, I got the look on that too. Low libido, and usually people that have dopamine deficiency that’s usually the addicts, the ones that get the big high. They can be sex addicts, alcoholics, drug addicts. They can be gambling addicts. And again, we have some things that will help your body have the raw material to make dopamine. We have a lady that comes in. She buys this particular product and she says, “My husband won’t take it if he knows it’s for his gambling addiction.” I said, “Well, tell him it’s for sex.”

What’s the particular product so that people can know what that is.

DopaBoost works real well.

Okay.

But, I said, “Tell him it’s for sex.” And she said, “He’s lost his interest.” I said, “Okay, that’s kind of typical of dopamine.” I said, “Stir it in his coffee.” And she did it and he did great. And then she ran out, and he was doing so great. And about a week after she ran out, and he was doing wonderful, so she didn’t think anything about it. He went over to the casinos and spent – she said, “I don’t know what it was – ten or fifteen grand.” She said, “It’s a whole lot cheaper to buy this stuff and stir it in his coffee without him knowing.” It’s like, well, I’ve never had a chance to look at his thyroid but I bet you a hundred dollar bill right now his thyroid needs to be looked at. So, it’s a very intimate connection with the thyroid. Thyroid’s number one thing you should look at.

And if you guys are thinking, well I have a doctor that’s looked at my thyroid and they said I’m fine, but you’re naming off all of these different symptoms that I have and I don’t know who to ask. Well, that’s what we’re here for. We actually can run your lab in all but, I think it’s three states now.

Yeah, three or four. One of ’em is kind of up for grabs.

And we send you to your local Quest Diagnostics draw station, so there’s generally one close to you. The way you can find out is to go on greenwisdomhealth.com and on there you’ll see our lab panels and you can pick a panel. Which, the one we’re recommending today is the comprehensive panel. It’s the GWH, which stands for Green Wisdom Health, number three because that comes with Dr. Lewis’ free consultation, and it comes with a functional medicine report, 12 panels of lab, and supplement recommendations so that you’re not guessing at what’s missing. But you can actually put that GWH3 in your cart and before you go to check out it will ask you for your zip code and it will tell you how close you are to a lab so that you’ll know before you purchase if that’s something by you. Then you’ll have Dr. Lewis himself actually go over the values and make sure that you’re feeling optimal. Because I know there’s a lot of people out there that are going, I want to do this but I have no way of getting help in knowing where to get started.

And the other people, if we’re not close to you, we actually have a product that anyone can take regardless of whether or not their thyroid is sluggish or overactive either one, it does feed the thyroid. Dr. Lewis would like to explain that one.

Yeah, it’s called Thyrotain, and this a gold-rated supplement. There’s many different supplements that are mediocre, and there’s some that’s a lot worse than that. This is gold rated and it’s independent, third-party tested. It has vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E – the right kind. It has iodine and almost all hypothyroidism is an iodine deficiency, because we’ve told you about the bromine cascade, the chlorine, and the fluorine and fluoride that messes … they’re all halides and they take the place of where iodine should go.

But sometimes iodine is controversial. This has only 200 micrograms because there are some so-called experts that say you should never put iodine in a person’s supplement regimen if they have Hashimoto’s. Then you have other so-called experts that says, no, if they have Hashimoto’s you can give them 50 to 75 to 100 mg, which personally I think that’s way beyond overdose. But 200 micrograms will not hurt if you have Hashimoto’s.

Yeah, and I want you to discuss that a little bit because we are, golly, I can’t believe we’re running out of time here so fast. We get excited about thyroid. I had a lot of questions actually, but I do want to make sure we address the one question that we had regarding thyroid and it was the olive leaf. Is that what it was?

Yeah.

What was the question, exactly?

It’s from Maggie up in Kansas. I’ve got a lot of people from there. Yeah, let me get to that in just a second.

It’s got zinc, because zinc, selenium, and iodine are very imperative for proper thyroid function, and it’s the good stuff. It’s got N-acetyl cysteine and tyrosine, ashwagandha which is a stress adaptogenic herb, guggul resin which actually helps lower – guggul does a lot of things – but it helps lower cholesterol, and tumeric. Then the tyrosine I’m gonna talk about, then I’m gonna get to Maggie’s question about the olive leaf.

The tyrosine is incredibly important in making some of these conversions. It’s a precursor of adrenaline and the neurotransmitters of norepinephrine and dopamine – we just talked about that – which helps … it’ll help regulate your mood. It stimulate metabolism. It’ll stimulate your nervous system. It’s a mood elevator and lack of adequate amounts can lead to these deficiencies, which can lead to depression. It’s in here and because it attaches itself to the iodine atoms to form the active thyroid hormone. So, tyrosine’s an incredibly important amino acid.

Maggie, thank you very much for your question. I’m gonna get to the olive leaf and I’m gonna tell a quick story even though we’re running out of time.

She says, what is the deal, I guess how’s it useful for thyroid issues? If you have Hashimoto’s, which is an autoimmune disease, we have found some oh-my-God incredible products that does not stimulate your immune system because it’s already hypersensitive, but it stabilizes it, and that’s the olive leaf and something called SBI Protect.

But, olive leaf does – I made some notes here – it is very, very good treatment against infectious and degenerative diseases. It will kill or suppress almost every type of pathogenic microorganisms – bacterial infections, yeast infections, mold, fungus, and paracytic infections. It’s shown to be very antimicrobial in over 150 different infectious diseases and even HIV infected patients have demonstrated improvement to their immune system – this is HIV, folks. If it’s effective against that can you imagine what it would do for you? Because it increases your T-cells.

Let me tell you a story about olive leaf extract. I’ll try to make it quick. Fifteen years ago I had a couple of spider bites on my leg and I – you know me, it took me five days to go in because I’m not very smart – and I had a surgeon do a really good job of taking the spider out of my leg and they could not understand why I didn’t get the MRSA, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, the skin-eating bacteria, flesh-eating bacteria. He had another surgeon come in and he squeezed it, sniffed it, swabbed it, swabbed my nose. They said we cannot culture MRSA on you. We do not understand how this happens because the last 50 spider bites only one other person really didn’t have it and he was a young, tough guy fresh out of the military and I wasn’t. They said, why don’t you have MRSA because you get it from the spider, and if you don’t get it from the spider you get it out of the hospital. And I said, olive leaf. And I literally was giving a lecture to the nurses at 3 a.m. about olive leaf and all the pharmaceutical-sponsored research that went into olive leaf.

And the olive leaf we use now, we’re actually able to use less pills because it yields more of the allopurinol, and it doesn’t stink like the old one. So, thanks, Maggie. It’s really, really good stuff. It’s indispensable. We keep it at the house. Any time we think any sort of infection is coming through and we use it, it works incredibly well.

So you’re saying to use that for autoimmune problems that had to do with the thyroid like Hashimoto’s?

Hashimoto’s, but we use it a lot on rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s, lupus-

Can you just, if they have an autoimmune problem like that, can they just take olive leaf and that’ll be enough to get it under control?

Nope.

And why?

Well, there’s all kinds of other things you have to consider. What’s this monocyte doing? What’s eosinophils doing? What’s the neutrophils? What’s your chloride? What’s your protein level? What’s your globulin level? There’s so many different things you have to look at. Do not treat yourself. I just told you while ago I wasn’t smart enough to treat myself, and I was such a brilliant man it took me five days to go to the hospital, which was stupid. I only went to the hospital to get the spider bite cut out when I couldn’t walk. That was stupid. You always need help. Our medical doctors will bail you out. And Janet’s the one that healed me from this. So, good nutrition, get your lab. I’m telling you good health, and happiness, and energy can be yours.

And with that, that is today’s show. We appreciate you listening and we’ll be here next time for the Green Wisdom Health Show. You guys have a blessed week.

Hormones, Thyroid and Prostate Oh My!

images-1

Janet Lewis: Hello, and welcome to this week’s fun and educational show. I am Janet Lewis.

Dr. Lewis: And just because I said something about exciting, she won’t say that anymore, so men, there is a time to keep your mouth shut, and that’s usually most of the time.

Janet Lewis: Oh, we have had such a response from you guys. We are Green Wisdom Heath, by the way. Home of the low cost lab work, in case you’re wondering who we are, coming to you, talking to you. We are here to educate you about your health, and many of you have many questions about your health, and that’s where I was going with this.

We want to thank everyone for asking all these questions about their health, because it’s prompted Dr. Lewis to read more, which he already does anyway.

Dr. Lewis: I’ve got bags under my eyes. I think that’s a hormonal issue. I hope my prostate’s not as swollen as my eyes.

Janet Lewis: We literally … You should see his desk. There must be 10 books open, that’s sitting around, with tons of Postie notes in every one of them. I can’t keep him in Postie notes, because he marks every page like we do in the Bible, where we’re highlighting everything. He does that with his health books.

This week’s show is going to be fun and entertaining, because we are going to talk about hormones. Men and women’s, because we’ve actually had men asking about theirs, as well. It’s not just for you ladies. We’re going to talk about the thyroid connection to these hormones, and we’re going to discuss swollen prostates, because I know that all fits together.

Anyway, Dr. Lewis, do you want to start us off with what you’d like people to know, and then we will make sure we get to everyone’s question that they’ve asked, and try to come up with a very educated answer for you.

Dr. Lewis: Well, you know, I’m just going to give an overview of the questions. We’ll get more into them. Alice said, “How about how hormones and thyroid are related?” Then there’s one I just really, really wanted to get to. Sherry says, “Thyroid, menopause and weight loss.” That’s when a man should shut up and not say anything. Tricia, oh god bless you. You’re the funniest thing on the face of the earth. “Why do some people stink when they sweat and others don’t?” Thanks, Tricia.

Janet Lewis: I don’t know where that fits into our hormone thing, but we’ll [crosstalk 00:02:21].

Dr. Lewis: No, I’ve got an answer to that. On the Shoot’n Straight with Dr. Lewis, we’re trying to invite all of you to join.

Janet Lewis: On Facebook, if you don’t know what he’s talking about. He does have a closed Facebook group, called Shoot’n Straight with Dr. Lewis, so if you’d like to get in on these questions, and ask them also-

Dr. Lewis: Aks them?

Janet Lewis: I know, I already …

Dr. Lewis: Lizzie Borden. Okay. Aks them.

Janet Lewis: You can ask questions on there, and we will address them in the following week’s podcast.

Dr. Lewis: Yeah, and like I said earlier, on previous podcasts, I don’t normally talk this fast, but I have to try and get this in. So when Tricia asked that, about stinking, I said, “You’ve gone from preaching to getting personal, there, Tricia.”

Here’s one from Jonathon, he’s hilarious. He said, “I know you said, ‘For the ladies’ on this one, but here’s a title for the prostate podcast: Enlarged prostate, gotta go, can’t wait.” Thanks, Jonathon, that’s cute.

Janet Lewis: It might work for women too, some of those, not just a man’s prostate that has that issue sometimes.

Dr. Lewis: And Kelly wants to know about PCOS, which I’m going to get briefly into, because that could be a long, long show.

Janet Lewis: So kind of tell us what’s going on with the hormone situation. Why are we having so many hormonal issues? I know, back in the day, you did not see all of these places around town that were offering pellets and creams and things. That just wasn’t an issue, and now it’s all over the place. What exactly is causing it? What can we do about it? Is there a healthy alternative? Where do we go?

Dr. Lewis: Well, it’s the plastics and phthalates that I talk about that mimic estrogen. You have to … and I hear this every day … “But I eat good.” No you don’t. You might eat better than the rest of the population, but you cannot eat good, because even organic’s not as nutrient-dense enough to have enough nutrition for your body to detoxify. Yeah, try to eat better, but …

Janet Lewis: Basically, is having a thyroid issue an indicator … or how do you know you have a thyroid issue, I guess. A, when the doctor tells you don’t, then you know something’s not right. How is that related to the rest of the hormones? Is there a tie between those two?

Dr. Lewis: I’ve said this about the liver, but it’s probably a little bit more true about the thyroid. If mamma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy, and the thyroid is getting bombarded with bromine, fluorine, and chlorine, which takes the place of iodine. I think it’s controversial if you have Hashimoto’s. Estrogen dominance, though, makes you go into a progesterone deficiency, and we see that about 99 times out of 100. I try to get most women to, at least once, test their hormones, even if they don’t have any kind of signs and symptoms of a hormonal imbalance.

Men, we have just added a new panel for an expanded lab panel. And it’s Dr. Lewis’s Low T panel, or I think that’s what we’re going to name it, that’s going to even test your estrogen … or estradiol and progesterone, which is really, really important.

But the symptoms of a low thyroid, which is the majority of the thyroid problems, and I won’t go through all of them, because it’s way too long, can be migraine, muscle pain, your husband doesn’t look good to you anymore, and reduced ability to sweat, Tricia. So if you’re sweating, you’re thyroid’s probably doing better. Hair loss, or thinning on the head, and that can male or female. We’re getting some pretty good results now with people that are sticking with it, and getting more, better, thicker hair. Constipation, depression, disturbed sleep patterns. It has a lot to do with the difficulty or inability to lose weight. Infertility and heavy menstrual flow. That’s where I was trying to go, because it does mess with other hormones, and I’m trying not to go down the rabbit trail for Dr. Amanda. She’s cute. She comes over here and picks on me. I’ve gone down the rabbit trail, Janet. Get me up. I’ve got too much to talk about.

Janet Lewis: Okay. Well, I think we need to explain to the audience, and people that are new listening, when you talk about the thyroid, are you talking about a TSH, is that what you’re referring to, as far as … Is that on a lab? Is that something they’re seeing? Can you explain a little bit about what is different about the way you look at a thyroid, versus the way the doctors look at it. And for the people out there that have lost hope, and they are looking … and they know they don’t feel good, and they’re overweight, and their hair is falling out, and they’ve got thin eyebrows.

Dr. Lewis: And not a thin waist.

Janet Lewis: Yes.

Dr. Lewis: Oh, I’m sorry. Was that wrong, guys?

Janet Lewis: And irregular menstrual cycles, and that kind of thing. What are we looking for on lab? What are you running on lab, and what are looking for?

Dr. Lewis: You don’t want to just rely on TSH, because that is just the signal from the pituitary and the brain. Normally, most of the time, if your thyroid’s working good, the TSH will go on the low end of the range, which usually is a .4 to a 4.5. You want it to be about a 1.5 or below, and that does vary, depending on the patient. Dependent on whether you’re on thyroid meds. The main thing is free T3, although we like to look for T4. It needs to be in the middle to high range, and then we can help T4 convert to T3. But you kind of want to look at al of it as a big picture. I like T3 Uptake, because usually the higher it is, the better, and usually the lower it is, the more estrogen dominant … or you’re on birth control pills that’s causing some of that. Hormone replacement therapy.

I’m not against anything the medical profession does, because I think they do a really good job in a lot of areas, but why are we not helping … That’s another thing, it just agitates me. People say, “But I research on Google.” And I roll my eyes and say, “Oh, okay. This one’s not going to get well.” I just talked to a sweet lady that’s my age, and she says, “Yeah, my daughter thinks she’s in control, and she’s driving me and my husband nuts. And he doesn’t go want to go and get his cancer treatment just because she’s pushing him.” Well, Google can get you so full of information, but not understanding, so please be careful. I suggest you go to somebody that you can trust for some of these answers, and let them have the final say. But you have to have that gut feeling of trust.

Just to talk about women’s hormones, in general. And I know I’ve read entire books about how estrogen will make you young, rich, and good looking, and make you feel better, and I understand that. If you and your doctor decides to do that, that’s great. But you’ve got to understand that estrogen supplementation increases your risk for breast cancer, heart disease, and other health problems.

Janet Lewis: And what is the first thing they give women that are going through menopause, is estrogen, because it makes them feel great.

Dr. Lewis: For a little while.

Janet Lewis: And it does. And we see it on lab, because they’ll come in here and it’s like, well their estrogen’s nothing, and then they’ll go get a hormone replacement therapy, and they come in and they go, “Oh my gosh! I feel so good. It’s like I’m back again.” I’m like, “Okay.” About three months into it, they come back again and say, “You know, I don’t know if I’m going to take that next round. I’ve had two rounds of the pellets now, and I’m beginning to think that they’re not working as well as they did the first time.”

Dr. Lewis: We see women with more testosterone than I have.

Janet Lewis: Yes, and so we run their lab again, and they’re at an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. They’ve begun to gain weight, which is a big no-no for women. That is what we do not want.

Janet Lewis: We can feel horrible and be thin, but we do not want to be happy and fat.

Dr. Lewis: Yeah, men should never say anything about that. You’ll get your head chewed off.

Janet Lewis: That’s right.

Dr. Lewis: Ouch.

Janet Lewis: And it just … And they’ve still got the problem, so it’s not that … You’re not making those hormones anymore, so the best thing that we give people for that, is to try to get them to … We try to bring out what they have left, and we supplement with natural compounds. We always stay away from estrogen. The only time we ever use an estrogen product, we have something called an E3 cream, that’s the lowest dose possible.

Dr. Lewis: That’s for you that have dry, painful intercourse.

Janet Lewis: That’s right.

Dr. Lewis: Let’s cut to the chase.

Janet Lewis: Yeah, and it’s not for intercourse, it’s just to help start making that not so dry. But as you do more of our supplements, you actually don’t need that anymore, so that’s a short-term, temporary symptomatic fix. The things that we use for it, is things like DIM. The EstroDIM is a huge one, because it goes in and gobbles up all those bad estrogens, and it helps balance out the hormones.

We have one for the menopausal symptoms now, that we’re really thrilled about. It’s called Femquil, F-E-M-Q-U-I-L.

Dr. Lewis: We just got that, and it’s already a big hit.

Janet Lewis: Yes. Women keep telling us, “Well, we have hot flashes.”, but it actually supports and balances the female hormone cycle. It eases symptoms associated with PMS and menopause, and it helps promote estrogen detoxification. That is an important one, because that’s the problem. It also provides antioxidant activity and cellular support. That’s something you can take without lab. You don’t have to have lab to do that. It’s just if you’re suffering from PMS or any kind of female issues.

Dr. Lewis: Men, wrap it in a red ribbon, put it in the middle of a bunch of chocolates.

Janet Lewis: Are you saying it helps with sex drive? I guess that would come back if you had that balance. I’m sorry, I’m a little slow. I should get to the chase. Cut through the chase.

Dr. Lewis: For the women, that may be from the thyroid, itself. Generally, it’s a progesterone deficiency, which is made, for the most part, in the ovaries, and somewhat in the adrenal glands. But if you have these dysfunctions like PMS and depression, decreased libido … Sorry, Janet, I had to put that in there … fibrocystic breast, food cravings, uterine fibroids, irregular and excessive bleeding, endometriosis.

There was a question about PCOS, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. That’s usually a sugar handling problem, but there’s plenty, plenty, plenty of research that says that’s because you’re also full of the plastics and pesticides and phthalates that cause you to be less likely to handle sugar correctly. We tell you, get off sugar and simple carbs anyway.

Janet Lewis: Pre-diabetic symptoms-

Dr. Lewis: Yep.

Janet Lewis: … is usually what that is. But usually when they have that, they also will have painful menstrual cycles. We actually have one for those girls out there too. I know we’re talking about menopause a lot, but there are a lot of young ladies out there listening, that have painful menstrual cycles, and it’s called Gabanol. It’s G-A-B-A-N-O-L. Because it helps promote muscle relaxation-

Dr. Lewis: Say that three times fast.

Janet Lewis: … and it eases … It helps alleviate exercise-related muscle pain.

Dr. Lewis: And guys, it  will make you look better, so put that in the package, surrounded with chocolates.

Janet Lewis: Okay. Everything’s going with chocolate today, so …

Dr. Lewis: I’m sorry.

Janet Lewis: His is the woman in our relationship. He loves the chocolate, and I don’t, so it’s kind of funny.

Dr. Lewis: Yeah, she’s a strange woman. That’s what makes her special.

Janet Lewis: So anyway, make sure the thyroid’s balanced, because if it’s not, you’re going to have problems with all of those things that Dr. Lewis talked about. One of the first signs of having a thyroid imbalance is that you don’t go to the bathroom right. You don’t digest your food correctly, and that’s one of the very first things that we hear when someone gets their thyroid work, and they’re like, “Oh my goodness. I’m going to the bathroom more often than I ever have before.”, and it’s because-

Dr. Lewis: Feels good, don’t it?

Janet Lewis: Yes. Because the thyroid has sped up your metabolism and digestion.

Dr. Lewis: Some of the brain fog went away, because you’re not swimming in your own excrement, and it’s flushed out, so think more clearly.

Janet Lewis: Yep, so Alice B., we hope you’re enjoying this segment on the hormones and thyroid, and how it’s connected.

Dr. Lewis: And you got to think about your hypothalamus and your adrenal glands, as well as your pituitary and thyroid. And we do have supplements for that too.

Janet Lewis: And then the other question was from Sherry R. She wanted to know more about it was so hard to lose weight when they’re post-menopausal.

Dr. Lewis: Because you’ve low testosterone, to start with. You’ve got bad digestion, bad gut, not enough probiotics, and low vitamin D. You’ve got parasites, which is almost always yeast. I tell people, “The parasites are not your teenagers.” I know it seems that way, but sometimes it’s something different.

Janet Lewis: Basically, they’re craving more bad stuff because of yeast, virus, that type stuff that’s in the body, that takes over and craves it, and wants more of it. Is that correct?

Dr. Lewis: Yeah.

Janet Lewis: One way to tell if you have some of that, we’re coming up here on the full moon. When you have the full moon come around, it seems that you crave more of that kind of stuff if you need to kill off parasitic.

Dr. Lewis: Yeah. Agitation gets a little bit more acute. It’s like, if you feel agitated and squirmy and wormy … Oh, we’ve done that show. Never mind.

Janet Lewis: And if you’re … and I’m not picking on it because it’s Texas, but here in Texas, we have a lot of Mexican food.

Dr. Lewis: Yeah, I love it.

Janet Lewis: Yes, and if it seems to be you’re wanting a bunch of that during the time of the full moon, it could be that you have a lot of yeast.

Dr. Lewis: Feeding the parasitoes. I can’t speak Spanish, but I know cervaza. Does that count?

Janet Lewis: Which also feeds yeast.

Dr. Lewis: [foreign language 00:17:08] I got lost in Mexico.  I told them, “I know chicken and beer. We’re good.”

Janet Lewis: The things that Dr. Lewis was talking about, the probiotics actually kill the yeast back down. There’s something called Para-Shield that we use. There’s one called Candicid Forte, because you can take less pills of it, but those are good at detoxifying, they’re good at helping you not crave bad things. They’re good a weight loss, because you’re not eating the bad things.

Yeah, weight loss is hard for being post-menopausal. A lot of it’s because you are estrogen dominant. I will tell you-

Dr. Lewis: High estrogen … I’ve got to throw this in. High estrogen can mess up your thyroid, so is thyroid messing up your estrogen, or is it the other way? It can go both ways. Sorry, Janet.

Janet Lewis: Well again, that goes back to the product I think every woman should be taking. Even a young woman should be taking, and it’s EstroDIM, because it’s going in there and unbinding all of the bad estrogens and helping you lose weight. It actually gets your shape back to the way it was when you were younger.

Dr. Lewis: Men should take it too, because it would help decrease the propensity towards swollen prostate.

Janet Lewis: If women can tell that their shirts are not fitting like they used to, through the back, like you’re thicker than what you used to be through the middle. Your hips are bigger than what they used to be, that’s an estrogen problem, because the body doesn’t know what to do with it, so it just stores it as fat. And those are safe places to put it.

Dr. Lewis: And fat cells actually make estrogen, so the … I know fat’s an offensive word, so … Those men who are fluffier have lower testosterone, because you have fat cells that are actually creating estrogen, not just the estrogen receptor.

Janet Lewis: DIM is a great thing for that, for young women. One way you can tell if you need it, is because of irregular menstrual cycles. And I know they’re giving you things now, to not have a menstrual cycle for seven months a year, or something. Oh lord, run. Just run from it, because it’s just making everything down the road harder for you, whenever you get older. You’re going to have all kinds of health problems because of that, because that’s not a normal thing, even though that’s a great idea for women at that age, but it actually does create a lot of the things we’re talking about. Down the road, that’s very hard to reverse, at that point.

DIM, will actually go in there and make that be right again, so if you’re having painful menstrual cycles, and they’re coming too frequently, or not … you can’t count them on the month. When they don’t arrive within 28 days again, the next month, DIM is a big thing to help balance that back out. It’s also something great for women that are trying to conceive. If you’re having conception problems, that is another problem of estrogen being too high, and not balanced. Hopefully, you have learned something about balancing those.

I’m going to let Dr. Lewis take this, because he just loves these questions that are different. And that did come from Tricia M. She wants to know why some people stink when they sweat, and others do not.

Dr. Lewis: How close are you getting to their armpits, Tricia?

Janet Lewis: Of course, that could be my colon story.

Dr. Lewis: Well you know, there’s actually studies that said women found that men that ate vegetables smelled better than men that ate a lot of meat. Then I actually took a big seminar one time, that said vegans start stinking because that’s not really a healthy way to eat. I know I treat dozens and dozens and dozens of vegans. I’m not trying to be judgemental, but people that eat a lot of meat do stink.

Part of it is, it’s what the bacteria do with what you’re sweating out, and the other part of it is, you may have the wrong bacteria there. Then there’s when you get afraid, very, very stressed, then sometimes that will tend to be more odor-filled.

I think if you eat more vegetables, that’s going to alkalize the body, give you more minerals and it will stink less and less. If you’re healthy, you really won’t have that kind of body odor. Sometimes, it’s heavy metals. I can smell some people. Sometimes their breath, and it’ll be metallic. But you put them on a cleanse, after a while, it begins to … the odor changes.

You can smell different things if you pay attention.

Janet Lewis: The ones with the big bellies, they seem to smell a little bit more. Those big round bellies [inaudible 00:21:45], because they’re so full of …

Dr. Lewis: They’re more yeasty.

Janet Lewis: Well, they’re not eliminating like they should, so their belly’s just getting bigger and bigger. That all starts coming back through the skin. They need to make sure their colon is going every time they eat a meal.

Dr. Lewis: Same thing with the breath, though. If you have bad breath, that’s partially the probiotics that are lacking in the mouth, which is the salivarius strains, which is lactobacillus salivarius, or streptococcus salivarius. You can re-inoculate that. We do that a lot.

Janet Lewis: Okay. Now the men have been waiting very patiently to hear about prostate health, so thank you men for going through this whole show and listening about women again.

Dr. Lewis: We have not been patient, because as Jonathon said, “Enlarged prostate, gotta go, can’t wait.”

Janet Lewis: Exactly.

Dr. Lewis: I like that. Jonathon, you’re awesome.

Janet Lewis: We’ve got questions from Jonathon, that wants to know about it also, because he says he’s on Flomax, and an enlarged prostate. He’s having severe congestion as a side effect. Do we have any alternatives to this medicine, and can you tell us what’s going on with the prostate?

Dr. Lewis: Yeah, we have a natural Aromatase inhibitors, and that is normally … In America, we use a lot of Saw Palmetto, and is a difference in the quality of some of the Saw Palmetto you get, and that’s a really good thing. But that’s a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. Then you want something that has stinging nettles root, which is really, really good, and you’ve got to understand that when I’m talking about prostate, these things also help you unbind the testosterone you have. Say if you have a 400 testosterone, you only have 50 of it unbound, that’s all you can use is 50. It helps unbind it too.

Janet Lewis: Stinging nettles is really good. We have it by itself as nettles, also, and it’s really great for women’s urinary tract things too. Not just for men, so that’s …

Dr. Lewis: And then Pygeum bark extract. That really comes from Africa. A lot of these better companies will source it from all over the world, and get the better stuff. The natives actually use this to support urinary tract health, and that has something to do with Lipoxygenase enzyme. Some of this stuff is … I tell people, “I am not a biochemist. Don’t want to be. Don’t like chemistry.”

I was on a podcast yesterday with a pharmacist, and she was asking me chemistry. And I said, “Oh good lord, you know more about chemistry than I do, but here’s the short answer.”, and she was like, “Oh my god.” So we have that, and then formula should always contain zinc, selenium, and copper. That’s really good for prostate, but also good for being anti-cancer and immune system boosting too. Almost nobody gets enough of these, and these minerals are being displaced by cadmium, mercury, aluminum, lead, that kind of thing.

Janet Lewis: What’s the name of that product again? That you were talking about, that had all of that in it?

Dr. Lewis: I’ve got memory pills, but I don’t remember to take it. It’s Prostatrol Forte. Folks, prostate doesn’t not have two R’s in it. It’s prostate. Protatrol Forte, that’s what I take. It says one a day, I take two. But you know, by taking two, I don’t have to get up in the middle of the night to go tinkle. And that’s worth a lot. A little extra deeper sleep.

Janet Lewis: And the EstroDIM also helps that, as well, correct?

Dr. Lewis: Every man should take that, but the Prostatrol Forte also helps with testosterone, and unbinding testosterone. That’s really a smart thing to do. I’m going to get off this in just a second, but if you started to gain weight and problems urinating, but men, if you have breast enlargement, you’ve created what you’ve been thinking about all these years, I think. But no, if you have breast enlargement, the man boobs … Janet just shook her head like, “I can’t believe you said that.”

Janet Lewis: Yes, I can’t believe he says that.

Dr. Lewis: Well, hey. I’m having a good day. I’m thinking about chocolates.

Janet Lewis: Maybe you have man boobs too.

Dr. Lewis: Mine are pretty good. I look pretty good for 168, 170 pounds.

Yeah, that’s an estrogen thing, so yeah, get on this Prostatrol Forte. It’s really a good thing. But that’s what I take, and I can take anything.

Janet Lewis: If you’re wondering, “Hey, I don’t know if I have problems with all this. I don’t know if the thyroid’s right. I don’t know what’s going on. I only know what my doctor told me is going on, and many times that lab was not very thorough.”, we do offer low cost lab work for those of you that do not know what we do, which I can’t believe you don’t by now. The new listener’s out there, I would tell you if you’re going to find out what’s happening, the best thing to do with the hormones and everything we discussed today, you need to see what your hormones are doing.

Probably the best panel that we have for that is our Comprehensive Plus Female Hormone. We’ve got that one, or the Comprehensive Plus Male Hormone. They are on our website. When you go on our website, you want to make sure that you pick the ones that start with GWH, and the one for female is GWH1, and the one for male is GWH2. The reason for that, is that it includes Dr. Lewis’s very thorough consultation with you. He actually calls you and talks to you, and tells you what’s happening with your lab. Now we offer Zoom, where you can see him in person.

Dr. Lewis: Yeah, you can see my mustache.

Janet Lewis: Whichever way you like to have it. If you would like to look at him, and it’s like you’re virtually sitting in the room with him. We offer that, as well. That comes with it. We give you a functional medicine report, and we give you a recommended supplement sheet of what he is suggesting to take to help correct the problems, because with our supplements, it’s not like going down the road and just buying them in a store of something we’ve mentioned. All of our supplements are pharmaceutical grade, which means they’re actually three to five times stronger-

Dr. Lewis: And more absorbable.

Janet Lewis: … and pure and absorbable than what you’re buying over the counter. There is a difference. Those of you that are going, “Blah, blah, blah. No, there’s not.”, yes there is, because we see it on lab. Because we see people that try to take what we’ve given them, and they buy the cheapo stuff. And they say, “I’ve been doing just what you said.”, and I said-

Dr. Lewis: Didn’t work.

Janet Lewis: Yeah. It’s not moving your lab numbers. You can keep taking it all day long, but it’s actually not helping anything on your lab, so yes, there is a difference.

Dr. Lewis: I’d like to make a quick mention. When Jonathon finished his question, he said, “I really appreciate all that you do. Thank you.”, and I just talked to a lady up in Oregon that was actually referred out of Texas from Wilson, is the one that referred this lady. Share the podcast, because the more you help other people get well, the more God’s going to bless you with better health. And let’s take this tense nation, and make it into something that’s healthy and happy and have a good time, because now … I’m so sorry, but I’ve gotten so busy, I’ve decided … You know, you’ve got weeds and flowers. And if you’re a weed, and a pain in the butt, I spend my time with flowers. So thank you Jonathon for voicing your appreciation.

Janet Lewis: Really. Thank you for blooming.

Dr. Lewis: Yeah. And then you’ve got people like Louis. He just keeps ordering. I never talk to him, so Louis, you know who you are, I think you’re out of Indiana, call me. I miss you. The more joy you give, the more joy and health you’re going to get back. Let’s try to be the difference that we want to see in America.

Janet Lewis: I like that. And on that note, we are going to wish you well for another week. And like I said, go to Shoot’n Straight with Dr. Lewis on Facebook. Send him a friend request. He will accept it. And then you can start getting in on the conversations too. You guys have a blessed week.
